The weekly box of vegetables from my community supported agriculture farm.
The meat bought directly from my local beef, lamb, pork and chicken farmers.
The quality is so much better than the grocery store’s products that I will happily pay up for it.
I don’t mind spending money on a truly good contractor for home renovation projects. We found a guy who is excellent and trustworthy and have used him for multiple projects in 2 different houses. I don’t even bother to get estimates from anyone else because while he may not be the cheapest, his work is excellent quality.
I’d rather save money by traveling less; I have to live in my house for (I hope) the rest of my life.
I see this question as a question of priorities. Kids, grandkids, pets, education and health related items which include shoes, healthy food and experiences.
A man is sitting at a bar, nursing his drink. A sexy woman walks in and sits next to him. They get to chatting, and the woman starts coming on to him. She finally leans over to him and whispers in his ear, “I really like you. I want to take you to my hotel room. And, for $200, I’ll do anything you want me to if you can tell me in three words.” The guy thinks for a minute and then replies, “Paint my house!”
There are a number of things I could list, but I’ll say what I recently said to my husband - “I may be cheap about a lot of things but I will always spend money on better quality toilet paper!!”
Kleenex. The real stuff. I was with S2 a few weeks ago, staying at his house, and I needed tissues. He couldn’t understand why the cheap stuff wasn’t good enough.
There comes a point when you’ve done enough research to know that only The Real Thing will work.
Travel. Healthy food, anything related to good exercise habits (though many of my running clothes are from ARC thrift shop). Any presents or money gifts I can get my kids to accept… though that is usually a hard sell.
Having stuff delivered to my door. This mainly involves stuff that I used to get at Target and drugstores. I won’t pay wildly inflated prices, but if it’s reasonable, it’s worth it for perhaps a few cents more.
First Class/business class flight’s and luxury hotels. This is because I do not like to travel ( I know I know, who doesn’t like travel? Well ,me). Thus if I have to travel….to see my kids or for a family event like a wedding…. I can only bear it if I do it in the most pleasant way possible. You know how people say the room doesn’t matter because you only sleep and shower there? Well my retort is My God I HAVE TO SLEEP there. And SHOWER! lol.
Quality service people like repairmen. A licensed plumber and electrician. Dependable snow removal. Anyone who will do task I can’t or don’t want to do.
A few really nice pieces of jewelry. These are things I’ve worn for more than 30-40 years. The dimming earring I got myself after I started my first big job are still worn weekly.
Household help: housecleaners, pool and lawn service. I am particularly grateful for it right now as I truly hurt my knee and am limping from place to place.
This wasn’t something I necessarily paid for but falls into a category that I don’t mind paying for good service.
We are taking part of our emergency fund and doing quarterly CDs. (I know HYSA might be more flexible but we aren’t fond of online banks). I called our local branch and told them we are opening another CD. The personal bank remembered us and I asked if she could prepare the paperwork and I swing by on Saturday morning sign it and bring home for my wife to sign and bring back. The banker had the paperwork done when I walked in excused herself from her current customer watched me sign it and I left to get it signed. What normally would be 30-60 mins total was just a quick stop on Saturday errands and my wife could stay in her PJs.
I will always pay a extra not to have to wait in line or avoid crowds.
