Have you seen a movie, or read a book that you just didn’t get? This is the “I just didn’t get it,” thread. C’mon, it’s summer, and even if you just don’t get this thread…make a comment! :)

I just didn’t get “The Sixth Sense” with Bruce Willis. I got that he was dead, but was the person that killed him the little boy all growed up?

I think they just made the two boys similar so that Willis’ ghost could redeem himself for the mistakes he made with the boy who killed him.

I didn’t get the “Pleasantville” movie. What turned the people colors? Knowledge? Discovery? Sex? A change of attitude?

I didn’t get American Beauty. It got rave reviews, and I remember being totally disappointed, and just not getting it. It’s been years, and I never watched it again.

I didn’t get Moby Dick. I seriously thought it was a how-to on whale hunting. (Until I picked up the Spark notes at a garage sale. )

sunny-
It’s because you’re from Florida. People in Florida don’t act like those dysfunctional people in “American Beauty”.

I never understood why American Beauty got rave reviews. It was great for those of us for whom a 1970 Pontiac Firebird, expensive bud, and Mena Suvari represent some of the finer things in life, but I did not see why anyone else would like it.

I’m still watching but I’m not “getting” the tv show “John From Cincinnati”.

I still don’t get The Great Gatsby, and I’ve seen it more than once. I don’t understand the plot, and I don’t understand why it’s great. That’s not necessarily a criticism - it is truly beyond me.

I feel the same way about Faulkner and James Joyce. Why do people read them?

The Great Gatsby? Is that a movie?

I thought the book was about the irresponsibility and self-centeredness of the rich.

When I read the thread title, the first thing that popped into my mind was American Beauty. My husband and I both just looked at each other when it was over. (What???)

We even saw that one in the theater because we had heard the rave reviews. Glad to know we’re not the only ones who didn’t get it!

I’m sorry…but this is exactly how I felt about “History Boys”. Throughout the movie, I kept asking myself ‘we are supposed to think the fat old child molester is cute because why?’

And don’t get me started on that mess that was “Babel”.

Have you read it?
Honestly, though, I find plots and such much easier to understand in books than in movies.

I’m very bad at facial recognition in movies. I remember and recognize faces quite easily in person, but for some reason when I watch a movie all of the same-sex characters tend to blend together. It means I’m often confused in movies unless I know the story very well or I have someone there to remind me who is who. Even then it’s sometimes a struggle.

ummm, I have a list of things I “don’t get”. It includes but is not limited to:

-rap “music”
-the TV show “Seinfeld”
-any of the early rounds of shows such as American Idol or So You Think You Can Dance where they highlight hapless individuals who clearly should not be there…makes me very sad and uncomfortable!

But I did like “The Sixth Sense”…one of the few times I have been totally shocked by the ending of a movie. I just loved that feeling.

Most poetry leaves me stumped. Unless it’s pretty literal, I usually don’t “get” the deep meaning the writer “intended”. This past year, I proofread one of D’s papers, which was a critique of a poem. I read the poem, then read her paper, and asked, “How the heck did you figure out that’s what it meant?” I mean, it was WAY over my head, I guess.

History Boys was junk! The lead teacher character made no sense. He turned into Snivel Leach out of nowhere.

Babel was a complete mess.

totally agree w/ ldmom about babel- i just don’t get it! it felt like a rip-off on crash.

I don’t get (or just don’t like) any movie where the filmmaker tries too hard to be edgy or outrageous, like most Quentin Tarantino movies, and even some Tim Burton stuff (though I loved Beetlejuice).

I also don’t ‘get’ John Travolta being chosen for the Divine role (speaking of outrageous!) in the upcoming version of Hairspray. Not big on campy either. Maybe my best friend in HS made me sit through one too many of those midnight Rocky Horror showings…
