I Just Didn't Get It!

I second Citizen Kane. Definitely put me to sleep.

Other films I don’t get I have categorized as “Guy films” and I don’t expect to get them. I put films like Borat, 40 year-old Virgin and American Beauty in that category.

And to leverage another thread, I don’t get “fashion” at all. As an example:
an old college friend was telling me how she had to coach young women in what to wear to work. She said that she ended up telling them that if you could throw it in the washer and dryer, you shouldn’t wear it to work. I honestly stated that that meant I’d have to go to work nude. (Technical R&D’s dress code, seems to be clean and non-distracting. Dressing up is a polo shirt and not a T-shirt; shoes and not sneakers or sandals.)

If we’re getting into fashion I absolutely do not get Coach purses.

I didn’t get “Eyes Wide Shut” and thought it was a complete waste of my time and there was another Tom Cruise movie with Penelope Cruz that I can’t remember the name of that I didn’t get. Those are my two most obvious.

I agree with reality TV and the elimination rounds of shows like American Idol.

Do people want to be on TV so badly they’ll do anything? (This applies to Maury Povich and Jerry Springer, judge shows, etc.)

I don’t get why The Jerry Springer Show has lasted this long. And are we sure that the little boy in The Sixth Sense is not the all growed up boy that killed Bruce Willis? I loved Seinfield, regular season and reruns, although when the guy who played Kramer did his thing earlier this year…I went on hiatus. I just could not imagine Kramer doing such a thing as that. I have never gotten Hogan’s Heroes, Star Trek, and Friends. I loved Forest Gump the first 3 times. I cried when Wilson was lost at sea in Cast Away, but I just could not do The Polar Express because I did not like the way the Tom Hanks character looked. How’s that for variety?

Elvis. I never, ever got Elvis. Although judging from the tabloid headlines at the supermarket checkout, the current crop of pop princesses make Elvis look like a genius.

Hummers for civilians. What the !!??!??? Who the heck needs to stage an all-terrain assault in suburbia?

Beauty pageants for little girls. Again: What the !!??!??? These children need or even want to parade themselves as highly sexualized faux adults? For that matter,

Beauty pageants for big girls.

^^ Totally agree. Beauty pageants are completely bizarre, what possible purpose…but the ones for little girls are just horrible, what are the parents thinking, how disgusting…

Agreed. The little kid pageants def. rate a 10 o the Creepy-ometer.

Yes. I’m with you on the little girl pageants.

Ah! LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE wrote the book on kid pageants.

Hmmm…well, one thing these two movies share is a theme of alienation. Perhaps that’s the problem. I could take or leave “American Beauty,” but I thought “Lost in Translation” was pretty good. It’s story about a middle-aged man and a young woman, each of whom are trapped in an unhappy marriage and temporarily trapped in Japan. So pass the time and to relieve their senses of alienation they have an emotional (not physical) love affair that is based on mutual respect rather than lust. And that’s what makes the story interesting IMHO.

The thing I don’t get: most jazz music. Jazz is something that smart people are supposed to like, but I just can’t get it. Not smart enough I guess. To me it has an Emperor’s New Clothes feel to it – deep down I suspect that many are pretending to like it in order to be cool.

I don’t get logo shirts, luggage, etc. First, I don’t care if anyone knows or doesn’t know how much I paid for an item. Secondly, why have a big logo on the front of your shirt, or on your luggage. If I’m advertising for Louis Vitton, shouldn’t Louis Vitton pay me?

^^^I sooooooo agree with that, Hayden. I refuse to wear ANYTHING with a logo on it - if the designer isn’t paying me to advertise their product, then, I’m not wearing their logo; also, I hate it when people wear clothing with logos of distinction when they aren’t a legitimate member of the group or organization represented by the logo.

I have several Michael Green bags ( he used to design for Coach and to me they are identical- classic design, good leather- he lives in Seattle and they used to sell them at Nordstrom for less than $100)
that I bought when the big name designer jeans were Sassoon. ;)

I also have a Burberry trench, that I bought when the only thing Burberry sold were rain coats.
( the first thing I bought when I was in high school was also a coat- but royal blue wool- I still have it but I don’t wear it)
I don’t wear it, but it fits my 17 year old and she loves it- it still looks fantastic- but I would * never* pay what they are asking for a new one.
Although it looks excellent for almost 30 years old.

I don’t get golf. Why are so many obsessed with it and spend so much $$ playing a game that usually ends in total frustration? I really don’t get watching golf on TV. Watching grass grow is more exciting.

In the fashion dept… I don’t get stiletto heels and why anyone would want to walk around the mall in them.

I didn’t get “Good Burger”, I regret spending 2 hours of my life sitting through that swill.

I also don’t get Paris Hilton or Queen Elizabeth. What’s with the Royal Family? I don’t get it at all.

I am glad I am not the only one to admit I don’t get Seinfeld. I don’t like sit-coms at all.

Jazz is a good one for this list. Except for the basic junior-high-jazz-band variety, I don’t really get it or like it. Same goes for Blues.

I’d forgotten about Lost in Translation – I was mixing it up with Adaption. Wasn’t crazy about either of them. Adaptation was disturbing, and just thinking of that car crash scene still makes me shudder!

Also don’t care for Bill Murray. He always comes off sort of smug…

I don’t get the fascination of shows like Dancing with the Stars or American Idol. On the other hand I really like and “got” offbeat movies like Vanilla Sky, Eyes Wide Shut, American Beauty (although cringed at the theme, too) and Lost in Translation. 2001 A Space Odyssey did nothing for me, although I love most science fiction. I dsilike and do not get anything in the vampire genre. Gives me the creeps!

Sixth Sense was very good - his only good one, IMO. Loved Seinfeld and really enjoy Desperate Housewives.

Just saw Borat. O. M. G. Gross me out. The premise got old fast for me, too.

To this day, I’ve been meaning to rent Chinatown with Jack Nicholson. Saw it when I was really young and it went right over my head, so I feel like I have to correct that. A Clockwork Orange did nothing for me.

I hated Leaving Las Vegas with Nicholas Cage and Elizabeth Shue! The tale of a suicidal alcoholic and a prostitute. Most depressing movie ever. Memento was confusing, but eventually made sense - and it redeemed itself.

I love poetry and jazz.

Fashion - not always against logos. Sometimes the logo item happens to wear like iron or has a flattering cut. Put it this way - I’ wouldn’t buy something just because it had the logo. doubleplay, LOL on the Vera Bradley purses. I have a friend who says that exact same thing!

Ah - all these old movies are coming back to me now–
I HATED Leaving Las Vegas. I think Nicholas Cage may have won an Oscar for it, though (?) I don’t get him either. He was ghastly in Peggy Sue Got Married, and, along with Cher, almost ruined Moonstruck (I LOVE all the supporting characters in that one).

When I was younger I never thought I’d own one of those snooty-looking Vera Bradley purses, but they’re lightweight, sturdy, washable. They’re the only things I carry now; I just go for the low-key colors.

I don’t understand people who are resistant to change or seem to gravitate towards drudgery. Individuals who are set on wearing the same old clothes and doing the same old activities perplex me. I must have new interests, ideas and activities. I look for change because it sparks creativity and rejuvinates me.

I recommend Birdy or Red Rock West
if you want to like Nick Cage-( but I loved Moonstruck)

I just don’t get how somebody doesn’t like any jazz or blues?
