I just got Scholarships.. Now What??

I just received $11,600 in scholarships. I may or may not get any more. What do I do now? How do I report them? My EFC is 5,700… so what will happen to my scholarships? In my aid package, a $2500 work study is included, and there are no loans. Can anyone give me a thorough explaination (or any explanation at all) on what goes on with this whole scholarship thing? Thanks!

Ok, and this is off topic… but I don’t know what to pick for my 5th dorm on my housing app! Right now my choices are 1. Elder 2. Bobb 3. McColloch 4. Slivka. The thing is, I don’t like any of the other ones. I definitely want to be on North Campus and somewhere air-conditioned! And, I want to live somewhere FUN! (Slivka doesn’t sound very exciting, but the dorm is beautiful!! ) Does anyone have any advice for me on my 5th choice? I am just really hoping for Elder or Bobb…

Thank you so soo much!

You can contact The Office of Undergraduate Financial Aid about adding loans. I did, and they added $5,500 in student loans to my aid! Depends on your need though, I think.

As for the scholarship, that’s the amount of aid Northwestern is giving you towards your cost of attendance for next year.

For work study, you’ll be applying for jobs on campus sometime around summer, I believe, and the money you make will go towards your education.

I heard Ayers (CCI) is a really nice dorm up North, it’s fourth on my list. Slivka doesn’t really fit in with your other choices though, as it’s viewed as antisocial while Elder and Bobb are the more social dorms on campus.

Fritos, thanks for answering! But, I don’t think I was specific enough…

The $11,600 were from OUTSIDE scholarships. The nu scholarship in my financial aid package was close to $32,000.

So how do I use my outside scholarships? What do they go towards, etc? Please help!

From the Financial Aid website:

If I receive an outside scholarship check in my name, what am I supposed to do with the check?
You must forward the check to the financial aid office for proper crediting to your account. You are required to report any outside scholarships that you are or will be receiving, as they are considered to be a part of your financial resources and must be taken into account with any other financial aid received. Scholarship funds are generally divided and applied equally over your quarters of enrollment.

How will an outside scholarship affect my aid award?
Because outside scholarships are a resource that you will be receiving, your financial aid will have to be adjusted accordingly. Northwestern’s policy is to reduce self-help first (subsidized loans and Federal Work-Study), and then University Scholarship assistance. Scholarship funds are generally divided and applied equally over your quarters of enrollment.

Thank you. Unfortunately that is not what I wanted to hear :(

Is it possible to spread out those scholarships over my 4 years? Because if they can only go to getting rid of my work-study program, which would be 2,500 worth of it, I will have $9,100 left of pointless scholarship money that I worked my ***! off getting!

That’s probably something you should email the office of undergraduate financial aid about. They’re pretty helpful.

Can you ask your scholarship people to defer it or spread it over 4 years?

Something is not adding up. The COA is around $59,000. Assuming your EFC is $5,700 that still leaves around $53,000. Subtracting your work study of $2500 that leaves around $51,000. If your scholarship is $32,000 where is the other $19,000 coming from if you have no loans?

The bottom line is if your work study amount is covered by the scholarship and you have no loans, what is your concern? If you would have received the scholarship prior to the fin aid decision it would have been taken into account and reduced your scholarship anyway. If you can attend NU for four years without any loans I would think you would be happy. I think what the excerpt tells you is if your scholarship is a one time non-renewable amount it would be divided among the four years so most likely will not affect your scholarship that much (i.e. $400 or so).

if you want to spread $ over 4 years, you should contact the scholarship agency to distribute it over 4 years, or whichever year you want it to be distributed. some agencies will, and most won’t. once you get the $, if you receive need-based $, then your scholarship $ goes into schools kitty. your school fin aid will remain unchanged. so in fact your school got the scholarship. there are some exceptions, of course. i think NU will take your $.

Kdog: The other 19k comes from Map grant, pell grant, pledge scholarship, and the federal seog ev something. The 32k was just the “Northwestern scholarship”

Thank you for the help everyone!
