I’ve never won anything because I can’t remember ever entering anything that awarded a prize. However, when I was in kindergarten, my dad got a phone call one evening that caused him to cry. He had had to buy a suit to start working in a bank, and the cost of that suit meant strain for our family. The store where he bought the suit was raffling off a washer and dryer set, and my dad had entered because we had one of those old mangle machines that was always breaking down, and he felt bad for my mom who was such a sport about it. When that call came to tell him he’d won the set, he just started crying. He’s always wondered if he really won it fair and square, or if it was obvious he was in need and someone took pity on him. In any case, I’ll never forget that night. My mother cried, too.
