I know Facebook happiness is elusive but....

…is everyone’s newsfeed full of friends’ kids graduating from stellar colleges, graduating at top of their high schools, posing with beautiful girlfriends (or handsome boyfriends) as they head to the prom? Sigh. Some days, it’s all too much…

Facebook is a carefully curated glimpse of a portion of someone’s life. (Kinda like those Christmas letters).

If you judged me by my Facebook feed you would thing I had the perfect life. I don’t post about the other 75% of my life that is not so charmed!

That was last year - this year has been filled with lots of “musings” by people that look like they have nothing better to do than contemplate the goodness of life and the beauty of butterflies in their yards or feel compelled to quote the bible intermittently throughout the day, everyday - how many times have I read the bible? Or, LIKE every derogatory political affiliation poster/ad yet they think is funny and expresses their views yet they can’t articulate a single personal statement about their personal political beliefs - oh yeah, you might have to explain why you believe that way.

The only way to win is not to play. Go for the underbrag: post about the mundane things going wrong in your life. This will make you feel superior because you don’t need to boast.

My newsfeed is full of people saying what dates they want to hit on pearl jams tour of the Midwest, thT was just announced today.
I’m just trying for Detroit.

My newsfeed seems to be “All cats, all the time.” I think I may be well on my way to being a crazy cat lady.

I just delete all of those annoying people and like more cat pages:)

Aren’t all young women beautiful and all young men handsome when they get all cleaned up for prom? There are no ugly kids on prom night  I just wish I could still look like I did in my prom pictures!

What is Facebook? ;)

I do get the good news, butterflies, and beauty. But I also get some who sometimes post vague, unnamed anguish or frustrations. And even worse than those are the ones who incessantly post all the mundane details of their everyday life: “Feeling hungry but nothing good in the fridge” or “Going to Walmart to buy some more diapers.” Why do they think all their “friends” need to know these things?

I am not on Facebook. There is plenty of posing in real life for my taste. Like everyone I know now supposedly has kids who get straight A’s without studying. No B’s are ever awarded in that high school except to my kid, apparently, and she studies hard! We were at the school last night for an event and they had the honor roll posted. I didn’t stop to read any specific names, but the list simply wasn’t long enough for all those allegedly perfect report cards!.

I enjoy seeing all the mundane thoughts, pretty photos, photos of food, recipies, check ins at random places, announcements, cat videos, uplifting quotes, even links to political articles that I don’t agree with, but might learn from or might make me think in a way I hadn’t before…

What drives me crazy are:

The “vague unnamed anguish or frustrations” posters who then don’t respond to 18 comments of support/asking-what’s-wrong. Or who respond with, "I don’t want to talk about it.

The completely crazy political rants.

Posts that show me the racist, mean, nutty, irrational nut you’ve become since high school.

Posts that express a very polarizing position…followed by 30 comments arguing about it (actually up through this point I totally enjoy the thread) followed by the original poster yelling in all capital letters something like this, “I HAVE HAD ENOUGH OF THIS! I’M FINISHED WITH FACEBOOK!” followed a week later with yet another polarizing post.

A lot of things drive me crazy on FB. I just skip over those posts and if the person is a repeat offender, I unfollow him/her. I do enjoy reconnecting with old friends, hearing what is going on. But as in real life, some people have no filters.

I don’t unfollow but block posts (so they won’t know) from many people. I enjoy seeing the occasional kid picture.
I don’t like being asked to pray for someones chickens. (yes that happened) there was also a chicken picture collage to go with it.

East Coast Crazy - there is a name for the vague , mysterious posts that cry out for clarification and seem to be done to attract attention - it is called “vague booking”

I don’t pay much care myself. If other people are living great lives, good for them. Doesn’t bother me at all that mine is more mundane and boring.

I agree with eastcoastcrazy - I actually love the pictures of prom and graduation. It’s this thing that drives me crazy:

How is it that everyone with whom I went to high school is now a lunatic?

Just unfollow the people. I’ve unfollowed many of my and my fiance’s family because of the constant religious and political posts. I don’t unfriend them because I still want to see pictures of family.

I am guilty of prom postings and also love seeing other such postings. Most of my fb friends are relatives who live far away or friends I made long ago because our kids were in the same class or program. So fb is how we keep up on all momentous changes-- graduations, proms, college decision etc.

I am not on Facebook, but this statement struck me as pretty mean: “I don’t like being asked to pray for someones chickens. (yes that happened) there was also a chicken picture collage to go with it.”

Yes, to some of us our pets are our family and some of the most important members of our life. Having them sick/unwell/in danger is devastating. If it’s a serious enough condtion, it changes your life - everything else gets put on hold. I guess you have to be one of the people that understands that. I have asked the people close to me to pray for my guinea pig during life-threatening emergencies. Thankfully, these people are close friends and completely understand.

I know people who have chickens as pets, and they absolutely adore them, no different than any other pet. The woman was probably just scared and desperate. I hope everything worked out well for her and her chicken.

I enjoy the the prom/graduation pics (just like first day of school pics of the younger kids), however know one I know is sending kids to top colleges or are top of top of the class lol. The one mom I know of a NMF hasn’t posted a single thing about it or where he’s going to school etc.
Plus I don’t have a child that age just yet. I imagine if my kids didn’t participate it might be to much-that’s when I’d unfollow.
Vague booking is the worst and I’m glad I have a name for it!
