I know these get posted all the time.. but what are my chances? (EE PhD)

Princeton
JHU
Rutgers
Stevens </p>

<p>I am currently majoring in EE at Cooper Union with a 3.8 GPA.
My GRE score is 790Q/640V/5W.
I have held an ongoing intern position with the military working on IP satellite communications research for every year that I have been in school. </p>

<p>I would say there is no need to apply to Rutgers or Stevens unless you desire to live in NJ. Your numbers are excellent - I would consider Johns Hopkins to ‘almost’ be a safety school for you. Good luck with your upcoming admission cycle.</p>

<p>mkilmart’s response MIGHT be true for master’s admissions but certainly is not true for Ph.D. which is entirely research focused and extremely competitive. What is your research profile?</p>

<p>Like I said before, the past four summers I’ve held a position at a military engineering research center, working specifically in a laboratory intended for research of IP communications over satellite. On all of my applications, I have marked that I would like to go into research in computer networks. The problems that I have studied include the comparisons of packet loss rate with respect to modem transmission power and how bandwidth is distributed when different numbers of modems are connected to the network. Some of my work has been presented, as was written in my LOR by my boss, to some of the “upper echelon” of the military. </p>

<p>At school, this past semester I have been working on a monte carlo algorithm to solve nonlinear mixed boundary value problems.</p>

<p>Have you done substantial work with faculty? Their letters will count for a lot. I did monte carlo simulation for my research project also coincidentally (although for something entirely different. Sounds like you are doing fluid/wind mechanics).</p>
