I know this is kind of late...but where should I apply?

<p>Hey guys, I applied early to Caltech, MIT, and the UMKC 6-year med program. Rejected from Caltech and MIT (not deferred from MIT, REJECTED), and 6-year med hasn’t replied yet.</p>

<p>These are my stats:</p>

<li>SAT I: 800 Writing, 740 Math 740 Reading</li>
<li>SAT IIs: 800 Math II, 800 Chemistry</li>
<li>ACT: 34</li>
<li>GPA: 3.1 (YEAH I KNOW)</li>
<li>Rank: Far, far down.</li>
<li>Other stats: National Merit Semifinalist, AP Scholar with Distinction</li>
</ul>

<p>Subjective: I should have good reqs, but nothing like stellar.</p>

<p>Location/Person:</p>

<li>School Type: Medium sized public size</li>
<li>Ethnicity: Indian (Asian)</li>
<li>Gender: Male</li>

<p>Also, this semester I got all B’s and 1 C. Yeah… I know…</p>

<p>Also, I took calculus III at a local community college.</p>

<p>I’m applying regular decision to Carnegie Mellon, Cornell (wont get in), Duke (wont get in), Northwestern, and Stanford (wont get in) and washington university in st. louis.</p>

<p>I realize now that I don’t really have much of a shot at any of those schools, and so I might be completely screwed for next year…</p>

<p>Where else should I apply? Could you guys give me some schools that have an admissions deadline of a couple days INTO January that I have a chance at? I know WUSTL has a Jan 15 deadline, for example, which works fine for me.</p>

<p>Why are you asking us to help you find a school? Clearly you’ve wasted your time applying to big name universities, without any safety schools.</p>

<p>Without any time to research universities, you probably won’t have much time to check for fit. But maybe try some big state U’s. Your standardized test scores are good and I feel that they’d be more likely to forgive the GPA and rank.</p>

<p>If you are trying to get into Medical school You might consider Virginia Common wealth’s accelerated medical program. A friend’s son was considering top schools last year and had the GPA and SAT scores to have got into some of them but decided to accept an offer of this school because he got into the accelerated medical program with good financial aid. Just a thought, I don’t know much about the school or the program</p>

<p>LOTS of schools with deadlines in January or later. If you limit yourself to the higher ranked ones, though, your options are much more limited. Is it necessary for you to attend a school with a certain level of “prestige”, or are you open to lesser-known schools?</p>

<p>Also, have you looked at your financial aid needs? Can you attend any school at full cost, or will you need merit or need-based FA? As a NMSF, you are automatically eligible for good merit aid from many schools, and if you make NMF, considerably more schools and aid. The University of Kansas is but one option - here’s a list which might be useful to you.</p>

<p>No need to panic yet, but you do need to spend some time investigating your options and then getting some apps out there. While it’s fine to ask for our input, ultimately, you’re the one who needs to make up for past mistakes. Nothing just “happens” - go DO something!</p>

<p>You certainly will get into a decent college if you want to get into one, but you shouldn’t expect admission into an incredibly prestigious college with a B average. Just look at big state universities and at universities ranked below the top 50 or so. And be sure to check admissions websites and make sure that they value scores over grades.</p>

<p>Ok dude, obviously you are a smart kid who slacked off in school. A 3.1 is pretty extreme, and unless you’re a poor URM refugee it’s going to be hard to get into any of these choices.</p>

<p>I suggest you apply to good schools that aren’t exactly name-brand. Or, attend a community college for 2 years (they’re REALLY not that bad) and transfer to the school of your choice. </p>

<p>If you’re looking for a good premed school I suggest you look into some less selective colleges like</p>

<p>Binghamton
Union College
Ursinus College
Holy Cross
Florida State University</p>

<p>Actually Holy Cross is SAT Optional and is rated “Most Competitive” by Barrons Profiles and has a 96 Admissions Selectivity Rating by Princeton Review. I don’t think it is a great choice for this person.</p>

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (app closes jan 15 i think)
Purdue University (rolling admissions, only 1 personal statement needed)
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2 essays, and a Jan 2 deadline, so maybe not, but it’s a good school)</p>

<p>Good luck. Your standardized test scores are good, at least. You just might be fine.</p>

<p>Also, are you only applying to the states, or are you open to foreign universities as well? For example, Canadian universities (e.g. McGill, UBC)</p>

<p>You are an interesting case. I think that all of the schools that you’ve applied to weight GPA pretty heavily. Does your school deflate grades? What is your rank, percentile wise? Why are you getting B’s and C’s? You really want to address that question so that when you get to college you don’t fall into the same trap. </p>

<p>You are an automatic admit for University of Kansas, but I’m sure you already know that. That one is a no brainier. </p>

<p>What are your AP scores? I believe that schools in Great Britain only look at test scores and AP scores and not your transcript. </p>

<p>Canadian schools are strictly numbers too. I’m not sure how they’ll view the 3.1, but they tend to count only your more recent grades (10-12 or 11-12). </p>

<p>I can’t tell if you are premed? Engineering? Both? What do you want to do? Do you need finaid? What do you want in a college?</p>
