I like UC berkeley!!

As an ESL student, i have a dream to study in UC Berkeley, but It’s just a dream. SAT would be my most difficult to apply in College. Does anyone who came to United state for 2 years then got accept to UC Berkeley?

It is going to be tough, since you won’t have a strong background in writing, reading comprehension in English, and grammar.

I do know of people like that, but in their foreign countries, they usually studied at an English medium or international school that taught them English really well.

My friend who came from Korea to the U.S. four years ago got a 2000, but he had three years to rigorously learn English to do reasonably well in the SAT his senior year.

It’s not impossible, but you would have rigorously learn English.

Well, I came to Cal directly from a high school abroad (English was not there as a language of instruction) and know quite a lot of people who did the same, so it is definitely possible. You will probably need to work a lot on you English, though. I would suggest you take a regular course taught in English online (e.g., AP online classes), so that you improve your writing skills and reading comprehension. Also, you can buy several books that will help you with SAT vocab and such… It is not as hard as it sounds. Good luck!

It used to be fairly common for ESL students to do the community college -> junior transfer route.

ive been in the US for 6 years, and i got into berkeley, english is still a problem for me

besides, berkeley is always open to listen to your explaination as to why you might of had a low SAT score, i would have to say that your essay is the most important thing, in my opinion.

Yes you can
Ive been in this country for four years years. I spent my first year in English language development classes (no UC/CSU credit) and i got into Berkeley!!! but i worked extremely hard in high school (i took 11 AP courses, 4.3 GPA, extracurricular, etc). I got a 1500 on my SAT (very low) while the average is 1900+ anything is possible if you have determination. Good Luck. By the way my friend who came to this country three years ago got into UC riverside and my other friend to UCLA( only for years in this country).

What was the point of posting that?^ everyone knows that there are a lot of homeless people in Berkeley, but you can ignore them… Most of them won’t bother you.

someone told me there are tons of homeless in westwood. no one seems to make a fuss over them.

I took only 1 AP class in my Junior year. In senior year, I will take 2 to 3 AP classes and other classes are Honor! My GPA for the final junior year is 4.3. My SAT is very low 1370!

^^is that out of 2400 or 1600?

ESLStudent@
A 4.3 is pretty good keep it up and for the SAT i got a 1500 so not to far from yours but my advice for you is to apply to other universities so you can have more options (I’m not saying you will not get into Berkeley). Berkeley was my dream school and i ended up going to UCSD instead :). Try to write an excellent personal statement and I’m sure you’ll get in that’s how i got in.
