<p>They probably just need a way to verify you’re the person you say you are. Being there in person may be unavoidable in order to firmly prove this, but they’re pretty innovative and I’m sure they’ve dealt with this situation before, so I’m sure there must be a workaround. You got your original Columbia email info somehow; they must be able to reset the password to that or contact you through whatever channel was on your application, for instance.</p>
