I’ll be applying as a philosophy major, RD. Should I apply? Let me know what you think. Thanks for your opinion!

errrr, this is the yale board.

princess, I think you should tell him his chances are great, and that he should just count on P-ton and not bother with Y. Just sayin’…

You should apply. You’re competitive in all categories examined by the admissions board.

However, when someone says “good chances”, this means no better than 10 percent probability of admissions for the RD round. Of course you can be accepted… its just statistically safer to say to any Yale candidate “you will probably get rejected”. It’ll be a long shot no matter how competitive you are, but it might be worth a go at it.

Love your screen name, noch. Du farshteyst Yiddish? ;)

haha wjb…i don’t know much, but it’s been around the house my whole life so I catch on a couple words here and there…very funny, i was wondering if anyone would get that!

princess – my bad, i also posted on princeton’s board b/c they’re both my super-reaches…i’ve edited.

Being an editor-in-chief certainly helps-it’s a sign of leadership.

Sounds good to me, although, as you know very well, most selective applicants will have very similar applications as far as SAT scores, grades, and ec’s. There are many other very essential factors- and if you can account for them, then you have a strong application, in my opinion.

HAHA! I get the sn too! Love it.

And I think you have a good chance, but like everyone else said…Yale is Yale.

I think you should apply to highly selective schools if you are interested in them, as long as you (a) realize that they are very competitive for everyone and (b) include them in a list that includes match and safety schools. I assume that you will not be saying that you want to be a math or science major?

Hunt – haha, no i definitely do not plan on majoring in math or science…I’m applying as a Philosophy major because that’s what I’m interested in now, but we’ll see how it all ends up.

As for applying to match/safety schools, I definitely see what you mean…and I think I’ve done so::

Yale
Penn
Columbia
University of Michigan
NYU
Brandeis
University of Maryland

–That’s a pretty nice range right?

what happened to princeton :)

i see you’re applying to UMD…i’ll forgive you if you’re a marylander

I think that’s a sensible list, especially if you are from Maryland.

Your ECs are really strong. If your personal qualities shine in your app, you have a good shot.
