I’m almost 60 years old and I don’t know how to shop for clothes

Nordstrom, Neiman, and Saks usuallt carry them; they may not always have them in store, but they will send it to your house at no charge and take it back for free. I also have fair skin tone, and I buy mine in “Gobi” color - they match the skin color of my slightly tanned wrists. Here is the link to Saks:

They are also sold at Wolford boutiques and some lingerie places like Charmelle.

You can also buy them on Amazon. I have a pair and they are lovely. At this point in my life I wear pantyhose maybe twice a year (and I can’t really remember the last time I wore them --) and these are great.

LaMas, I’d ask around your area/friends. Around here, I think it would be a rarer occasion or only the elderly wearing pantyhose. - even to a more formal occasion. How much leg is going to be showing??

In case anyone needs to buy more of the bras they’ve already tried on and are happy with, here’s a sale at Bare Necessities. I buy my bras from this site when they are on sale.

ETA: Even when I wear the bras that they show on models in the photographs, I still don’t look like the models. Odd, no?

^^Haha!

You too, VeryHappy??!

I’ve joked that a big deal in learning Photoshop is to be able to put your head on some model’s body.

Ever notice, even the Plus models or in shapewear pics, they always look so much better?

I attended a function last night with a lot of attorneys & their wives. Many of the men were in suits and sports coats but very few of the women had stockings. Of course, this is in HOT, humid, Hawaii. It has been many years since I last wore any stockings or similar on my legs.

Thanks BB and VH.

I plan to wear hose to D’s wedding in late October.

I rearranged my closet this weekend and grouped my tops by color (rather than sleeve length/tanks) and holy moly I pretty much have 80% of my tops in shades of blue or pinks (primarily fuschia).

Ladies, have a little laugh:

Very clever!!! ^^

After living overseas for nearly three years, my daughter is home and looking for a job. We went shopping for basic work wear yesterday and she found some great pieces at end-of-season pricing. I am so much better at putting outfits together for somebody else than I am for myself. Why is that?

Hello, style team! I wanted to give you a few updates.

Tailoring is amazing. I’ve never gotten anything professionally altered before except hemming, but I’ve had all of my new pants done (because they run a little wide in the hips), as well as my formal dress. It’s unbelievable what a difference it makes. Well worth the few bucks it costs.

There was a hole in my wardrobe, namely little t-shirts to wear with jeans. Not team-logo type t-shirts, or the kind of t-shirts with sayings on them; I have a closetful of those. But I needed just some little knit tops to wear with jeans. So I went to Target and got a supply. ALL BY MYSELF! I remembered some of my lessons: Eliminate anything that’s not in my color range, or compatible with it. Mid-hip length. Scoop or V-neck. Stop trying on the wrong size, because nothing looks good in the wrong size. Once I applied those filters, it was really easy! I picked out 3 styles, eliminated 1 style because the V was too low. And then I deployed another lesson: If you find something, buy it in multiple colors. I left with 5 little shirts in 2 styles, all on sale or clearance. And not a single tear was shed.

Another hole: A basic blazer. I think the blazer-with-jeans look is just smashing for almost any occasion. So when I was picking up my dress, I got myself this: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/halogen-one-button-suit-jacket-regular-petite/4087317?origin=category-personalizedsort&contextualcategoryid=0&fashionColor=&resultback=710 It looks amazing on me, if I do say so myself.

So beginning in March, when I replaced all (two) of my work shoes to comply with podiatrist’s orders, and continuing in June, when I replaced my entire stable of ancient bras with new good-quality properly-fitting ones, and then sweeping into August which you all have experienced with me – I have replaced all of my clothes except my socks, my undies, and my cozy sweats which I will never give up. Even my outerwear is new, with the little sweaters, the Levi’s jacket and a heavier rain-resistant jacket for winter (to replace my previous one I got when D was in middle school). All the fraying work shirts – gone. All the ill-fitting work pants – gone. The too-short jeans – gone. The cheap shoes that hurt my feet – gone. The mens’ UW t-shirts – well, not gone, but also not to be worn when I should wear something a little better.

It’s true what Stacy & Clinton used to say. Clothes really affect how you feel about yourself. For the first time I can ever remember, everything in my closet is something I’m excited to wear. I can’t imagine any event for which I don’t have something appropriate to wear, and that’s a first too.

What a glorious post! LasMa, that is fantastic!! I commend you!

Hurrah, @LasMa, and you have inspired MANY of us to spruce up our wardrobes and retink how we are dressing. It’s great that you love your new clothes and you (and we all) DESERVE to enjoy your wardrobe and wearing clothes you enjoy and feel great about. Partly because of these threads on clothing, including yours, I have updated my wardrobe. I have donated all the dresses I don’t really LOVE and replaced them with new ones that I love an look great in. I have also updated my lingerie wardrobe and feel that I look and feel better in my clothes.

I am pretty much able to go anywhere now, with the 4 new dresses I bought and the new pair of washable wook slacks that will help me stay warm in cooler temps when we travel.

The blazer you bought is very nice and pretty reasonably-priced. Great that you now are able to shop with more confidence and buy things on your own, off the sales & clearance racks, no less!

I’m fond of a nice blazer or jacket with jeans, somehow all of mine look so matronly. And then I realize when I bought them, no doubt I should update them. I don’t totally hate shopping, but I really dislike spending money on clothes. I love shopping for t-shirts at Target though, they have lots of nice ones in good colors.

The main reason I shop Ross or TJs or Nordstrom’s Rack at all is because they sometimes have amazing prices and good quality items. I try to browse when I am not urgently needing things, but have seen some nice blazers there from time to time. It seems seasonal. Macy’s also has blazers and suits at amazing prices sometimes. I bought a suit there in the past few years for under $100 on sale–the original price was about $300. It is a blazer and constrasting slacks and I’ve worn it several times.

On the basis of this thread, I signed up for a Stitch Fix. I told the stylist: pants, shirts, a sweater. We’ll see what comes back. I figure I only have to like one of the things to come out ahead.

I did too. My first box arrived yesterday and while they got what I was asking for, nothing worked. For “skinny” jeans/pants, they sent elastic waist jeggings and pants - neither of which I would ever wear. Their house brand is cut too narrow across the back for me, so even though I liked one of the tops (the other fit but was way too boxy, so not flattering), both it and the blazer were too small for me. These were the same sizes that I normally wear, but just not cut right for me. I may try one more box, but this one is going back in its entirety.
