I’m almost 60 years old and I don’t know how to shop for clothes

I hope I have better luck than that. If their house brand is cut narrow across the back, it won’t work for me. I’ll be pretty disappointed if I have to send back everything.

Fingers crossed for at least something of use for you, CF! (And congrats on coming back from your adventure in one piece).

Did you tell them that you have a wide back? I’d imagine that you’d have to be pretty specific in describing sizing challenges in order to ensure success; otherwise how would they know?

Are you assessed a fee in this case?

I’m not sure, but yes, I think so. I told them what sizes I normally wear and my chest size…to be honest, I wear a M or 8/10 in pretty much everything, so I’m not sure if I have an unusually wide back or if their brand is cut narrow. I did think they “got it” in terms of my style, but I’m not sure their brands will work for me. The “outfit” cards they include are great…helps to see the items with other clothes, and gave me some ideas for things in my own closet! You know the saying, “if you don’t shoot, you can’t score”, well, I’m glad I tried it.

It’s such an interesting concept, Stitchfix.

As someone who likes to shop (in stores) , I don’t want that opportunity taken away!!!

Stitchfix charges a $20 “styling fee” if you don’t keep anything. The return shipping is free.

Following LasMa’s lead, I ended up getting an appointment with a Nordstrom’s personal shopper. Oh dear. That was an expensive undertaking. I needed some pants, some tops, and some sort of jacket or cardigan to tie the whole outfits together.

I walked into the room, to find that she had gathered together twenty or so garments in colors that I hated. My heart sank. But when I vetoed them, she quickly managed to zoom in to things that worked for me, in a colorway I love. I bought a couple of Not Your Daughter’s Jeans in colors, which fit me perfectly (though who knew I’d ever wear a size 8), and some great-looking knitted tops. And then the big splurge:

I love the double-faced fabric, it’s sculptural but still drapes well, it dresses up and dresses down, it goes with all the other stuff I bought and most of my other clothes including jeans, and it looks great on me.

I still want a long drape-front cardigan, but I think I’ll just knit one.

Love the jacket!

Nice!!! I bet you will get a lot of mileage out of that EF jacket/wrap. What I like about Nordstrom personal shoppers is that they are trained to listen to the customers likes and dislikes and to not push something that would make the person feel intimidated. It definitely sells!

The funny thing is she didn’t find that jacket for me. I saw it when I walked in, and it immediately caught my eye. She did find another long open cardigan that I adored, but sadly had to leave behind. I just couldn’t justify spending any more money.

CF, welcome to the Nordstrums fan club. I was there last night to buy male friend a new belt. We ran into sons personal shopper. She worked with him one afternoon 8 years ago, but has all his measurements on file. There were times son would ask for new jeans, and she’d pick one out, have it hemmed, and mailed to him. This time, she mailed 2 t-shirts, in his size, for no extra charge. The shirts were on sale.

I think you will be happy you splurged on that jacket, and wear it well for many years. Did you see the shoe sale? Shoes are my weakness.

I saw the shoes. I thought I might try to find a simple pair of loafers or boots to wear with jeans, but what a madhouse. I’ll check Zappos instead.

Love the jacket, CF! Glad your shopping trip was a success!

Great-looking jacket!

For a few days I thought I might not need a Nordstrom personal shopper to help me find something for my HS reunion but you’re making me re-think that.

It doesn’t cost anything to have an appointment with a personal shopper. And my shopper was responsive to my concerns about cost. I tried on some pants that I liked, but then when I looked at the cost, I wasn’t willing to pay it. She quickly came up with similar pants that were half the price. Same for shirts. The jacket was pricey, but, I have to remind myself, I picked it out and asked her to go get it.

@“Cardinal Fang” , sounds like you had a very positive experience. I’ve never tried a personal shopper, but it sounds like you, OP and several others have had positive experiences. It’s nice to keep in the back of my mind.

It was funny, because when I initially went into the dressing room and looked at all the clothes the shopper had picked out, my heart sunk. I thought to myself, these are awful and I hate them. I can’t stand the color, and a leopard print, ugh. IIRC, the same thing happened with LasMa: at first she didn’t like anything.

So, my advice to you if you get a personal shopper appointment is to give the shopper a chance to come up with things you like.

Yea, probably best if you can provide tips to the shopper about general likes and dislikes, colors and styles you love/hate, it may be more upbeat and point the shopper in the correct direction.

I did give tips to the shopper about colors when I made the appointment, but I guess we didn’t connect on that. No matter. She was quick to find garments I like once I gave her feedback.
