I’m almost 60 years old and I don’t know how to shop for clothes

Just a thought re jackets/blouses…if you are of an “age” where you get hot flashes you might want to consider if you typically can wear both a shirt and jacket around the office. If not, you need to assess if a bold print will be too scary.

I know! I have a friend whose DH gave her a pair of beautiful pearl studs for an anniversary years ago, and she wears them every day of her life no matter what else she’s wearing. I can’t even visualize her face without those pearls next to it.

Audience – now there’s a thought provoking question. The first answer is my co-workers, as I don’t meet with clients. I think you’d say our office is upper-end of business casual. But my style insecurities go way back to junior high, so there’s probably a lot more audience than that. I’ll have to ponder that. In recent months, I’ve broken through junior-high insecurities in the physical-fitness arena, and it’s been really liberating. I’d love to liberate myself on this topic too.

What do we think about my appointment length? One hour or two hours?

^at least two.

Two it is, thanks.

OK!! I have an appointment at Nordie this Sunday.

I, for one, can’t wait to hear how it goes. Thanks for this thread.

Good luck with your appointment! Keep us posted!

LasMa-good luck with your appointment! Maybe you’ll inspire me, among others.

I despise shopping, too, and have often bought things which really do not fit, but I keep trying to wear them. I would like them more if they were the correct size, but I get lazy and buy a larger size if my size isn’t available. I need clothes for work-pants or dresses are fine as well as for religious services, where dresses would be fine and don’t need to be dressy. I have zero patience for shopping. When I was much younger and was working in a situation where I needed suits, I had a “go to” place with a personal shopper. I sat in a dressing room and she brought me suit after suit. Alas, the store went out of business a long time ago and was located fairly far away from where I live now.

Huzzah! We require a full report!

Good luck, LM!!!

And have fun!

I’m so excited for you hoping you give us all the details.

Phew… Finally caught up with reading the posts…

Excellent news! Good luck with the appointment. Just make sure to tell the personal shopper your specific price ceiling.

In the process of becoming fashion-savvy (you should have seen me when I was in my 20s - most of you would shake your heads), I discovered that there are several stages: first, realization that a change is needed, second, understanding what works for a specific body type, and then the skill of putting together my own outfits. It is easier to dress someone else than to dress yourself! LasMa, you are at the stage 3.

I haven’t read all of the posts, so sorry if I’m repeating. You may want to take some pics of outfits you like, or show the shopper the links you posted here, so the person can get an idea of what you like. Do report back.

Enjoy! I don’t love shopping. I usually go for sort an arty tinged preppy style. I’ve gotten more and more casual as time goes on. I met a client today I’d never talked to in very casual verging on cargo pants capris, a white t-shirt with v-neck and a few buttons, wedge espadrilles and some earrings I’ve had forever. I did dress up my pony tail by wrapping some hair around the elastic.

I think a ponte knit black pant would be interesting for you to try on. Keep an open mind and have fun!

@1214mom You read my mind. I’m printing out links (in color) to take to my appointment.

@Kajon Interesting. I think I’ve just about decided that what I need is a full wardrobe of black pants for every occasion. Will ask the stylist.

This is more in line with how I currently dress at work, shirt tail out over pants. I like this shirt a lot. It’s traditional (safe) because it’s plaid, but it’s interesting – also because it’s plaid lol.

Yup, I’d definitely wear that shirt. And I have too many black pants to count.

It’s beautiful.
Want to warn you my Nord is between the sale and the big load of fall things arriving. If you find this at yours, show the pics, have a good convo and have the PS call you when things come in, she can have them set aside for you.

I think I’m the only woman in the universe who doesn’t own a single pair of black pants - not jean or otherwise! Black skirts or dresses, yes - pants, no.
