That link in Post 116 is beautiful. But one reason the shirt is so lovely is because it appears to be silk, and because the model is so lean and tall. A plain blech plaid shirt in cotton that’s wrinkly and too big won’t look 5% as good.
Agree, VH. And since it’s Burberry, it may run $300+. LasMa, you’ll also want an idea of your budget and how high you’d go for any individual piece. One of the things I like about Nord is that, ime, you can be frank about that and they don’t get snooty.
Now that you know you like that look, you could walk through any good store and just scan for similar or ask a clerk what they have like it.
There are at least two of us. And all I wear is black, white or a combo.
VH, #120
I think fabrics are as important as fit.
Here’s that shirt on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/325-New-Burberry-London-Womens-Shirt-size-us-6-/271933022753?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f5078a221
It looks like silk to me too, and though I’m slender-ish, I’m certainly not model-thin. So the shirt definitely wouldn’t look the same on me. Anyway, I would never spend that kind of money on a shirt (or any single piece)
. I’m going to show it to the stylist as an example of the style and that I could go with a bolder print, especially a graphic like that.
LF, I have a budget and I’ll be firm about it, no problem with that. My idea about how to spend it is morphing a bit. I really need to get a completer piece for my upcoming event, so that’ll have to be in there. Then, especially given what you said about Nordstrom being between sales, I think I might get one or two work shirts to get my upgrade started, and then as you said, ask her to call me as candidates start coming in for the fall. I don’t want to do an instant overhaul anyway, that would be too much shock to the system.
LasMa, keep open to trying on ONE nice comfortable dress - you sound tall and nicely proportion - I think you’d look great!!!
Button down blouses tend toward gapping at buttons for me or they fit at the bust and are huge at waist. I have gravitated toward knits and pullovers instead. I have mostly black and dark slacks and jeans. A few navy jeans and one grey jegging but otherwise lots of black bottoms.
Can’t wait to hear how things go with your personal shopper.
I wear mostly black pants, but also a fair amount of gray and blue. I used to wear suits every day, but have started dressing more casually over the last couple of years. Dresses in the summer are easy. I’m not great at accessories. I like scarves on other people, but they don’t feel natural on me. For many years, I only wore real gold jewelry. Now I do silver, and have costume jewelry also. When I was younger I worked retail part time, and dressed very nicely. But now I’m pretty boring.
“Button down blouses tend toward gapping at buttons for me or they fit at the bust and are huge at waist.”
One word: Bashina. Looks like a button down but does not have the gapping problems. I have several of these in my wardrobe; all bought on sale at Nordie’s:

Those are very attractive. Have never heard of that brand before. I was buying Foxcroft, because I love that they don’t wrinkle. Got them on sale at the Rack. Will have to consider these if I opt to try something other than pullovers (which actually work well for me). Will keep an eye out when I go to the Rack. Generally find Nordstrom’s over my budget and not my kind of place.
@BunsenBurner , that is a gorgeous shirt. How often have you seen them on sale, and for how much?
I usuallly look for 50-75% off sales. Here is one on sale at 40% off:

Here is a version without sleeves:

@lasMa, in case you don’t know, BunsenBurner is an EXPERT sale shopper.
Along with my closet that has no black pants of any sort, I have not one blouse! Have always had an aversion to them! (for me) Guess I can’t go shopping with you guys!!!
Watch Nord Rack. They sometimes have Bashina- waaay lower price- but seem sold out now.
Do you get sale notices, BB?? I like nordies, get overwhelmed by nordie rack but would not pay $200 for a blouse.
Jym, I would not pay $200 for a shirt either. I bookmark stuff I really like, and when the big clearance seasons start (usually 2X year, in June and December), I check my bookmarks and keep rechecking them. Saks actually sends out notifications of sales with links that lead to discounted prices before the discounts appear via googling on their site. I also shop the Rack etc. online as well as “the usual suspects” (RueLaLa, Outnet, and the others). If something looks like it will sell out quickly, I pull the trigger sooner, otherwise, I wait until the bitter end.
So when you say “watch the sales” what do you mean? Do you literally go to the website of each store you like every few days to see if there’s a sale on?
I’m nervous for my appointment tomorrow. I know I shouldn’t be, but I am.
I can’t remember if I mentioned my Levi’s meltdown from last weekend, so forgive if this is a repeat. Kohl’s no longer carries Long sizes in the store, and I wasn’t about to go traipsing all over town in the state of mind I was in. So I ordered some online, and they arrived yesterday and I wore them out to dinner tonight. They are perfect! They fit wonderfully in the waist, my butt looks fabulous, and they make my legs look a mile long.
As I was admiring myself in the mirror, I realized that this is the ONLY garment I own which makes me feel happy and pretty, and after doing a lot of reading on the internet this week, I’ve learned that every girl deserves to feel that way at least sometimes. But I made the mistake of saying this to DH, and Mr. Sensitive – who is very well acquainted with my clothing/shopping psychosis – snorted and said “Why??” Seriously, buddy??
OTOH, I have a wonderfully supportive daughter who is extremely patient with me, though she’s the exact opposite herself. I checked her facebook last night, and she had messaged the friend who she thought works at Stitch Fix to say that her mom who is “fashionably challenged and gets frustrated with shopping easily” had just signed up. The friend confirmed she’s a stylist there and said, “Excited for your mom! She can always request me as her stylist too!”
