Hi everyone. I’m a senior applying for the current cycle and my gosh, I’m absolutely terrified. I can’t help but compare myself to these wonderful applicants with extracurriculars that sound like things I’ve never even heard of. Genuinely I have no clue what half of these research projects, patents, and awards are. I’m definitely feeling a bit “average”, even though I’ve done the things I’m passionate about.
I’m submitting my first application in 2 days and I haven’t gotten a third set of eyes to look at my essays yet. Would anyone be willing to help? If not encouragement would be nice too hahah.
You’ll be fine. 99% of kids don’t have what you mention. And the CC isn’t a place where the normal student comes.
Make sure you have a balanced list where your stats fit and make sure you are applying to two schools at least that will be an acceptance and 100% hit the budget. And for all others, ensure they can hit the budget.
Colleges are skeptical of non-profits, patents, research assistantships and so on. Just be yourself. Having things you are authentically passionate about is a big plus. You will do fine if you focus on finding a fit.
Per you other thread you have excellent accomplishments, but nobody can chance you for the hyper-competitive colleges. One suggestion is to apply rolling/non-binding EA wherever possible – getting an acceptance or two early in the process took a great deal of stress off for both of my kids. And once your applications are in, put your focus on enjoying the rest of senior year with friends and family.
First relax. I took another look at your other thread and you are a very strong student. You are doing very well.
Regarding your ECs, again they are listed on your other thread. It looks like you have done what was right for you, and you have done it very well. This is exactly what you should be doing with respect to ECs.
Regarding essays, be genuine. Be yourself. Try to avoid obvious grammatical errors (which as far as I have noticed you have succeeded in avoiding in your two posts here on CC).
Generally in life we do not compete with all those other strong students and strong graduates out there. We cooperate with them. We learn from them. We find the path that is right for us, and do not worry about what others are going. I am really glad that there are strong medical students out there because some day one of them might be my doctor. I am really glad that there are excellent mechanical engineers out there because someday I might drive over a bridge that they helped to design. There are lots of universities and lots of jobs and lots of careers to choose from. You too will find the right path for you.
Regarding schools to apply to, make sure that you apply to at least one and preferably two safeties. These are schools that you know you will be accepted to and you know you can afford to attend. There are a LOT of very good colleges and universities in the US. There are a lot of colleges and universities where you can get an excellent education. Since you are from California (if I am remembering correctly) there are also a LOT of very good in-state public universities that you can consider.
Then relax and optionally have some ice cream. Gelato is an acceptable alternative.
Ahhh the other thread earlier today. You have safeties. If you like and can afford, then you’re in great shape although I’m not sure your school choice is optimized for your major.
