Hi, so I have always wanted to work in law enforcement because I like helping other but don’t want to be in the medical field. And I’ve always tested very well in English and Reading but I suck at writing and hate doing it. Are there any college majors/careers that sound like they would work for me?
Thanks so much I’m a little lost and Im a junior so it’s getting late haha
I mean if you are interested in a law enforcement career, you could consider criminal justice or criminology.
How about Criminal Justice? Or Emergency Management?
Take a look at John Jay College in NYC. It’s part of CUNY. It has a huge variety of those types of majors. Even if you don’t want to apply there, their list of majors may open up your eyes to some possibilities.
Or LIberal Arts-- you could always decide along the way.
One thing you could do is go to the writing center at your school. Writing is a skill that can be developed. My H is dyslexic but wasn’t diagnosed until adulthood. He struggled with writing until college, when he had a professor who worked with him on his skills. I met him in law school and also worked with him on his writing. Now, he is an amazing writer who can really turn a tale into a work of beauty. This is not anything he envisioned growing up. So, bottom line, it is possible to improve your writing with hard work and proper mentoring.
OTOH, the type of writing that you need to do in law enforcement is very factual. I would recommend that you take a class in basic journalism. You will learn to write in the 5 W’s + H method - who, what, when, where, why and how. I started out as a journalism major and find that the skills I learned in that discipline have helped inform my writing to this day. Journalism was not the right career for me, but I am so glad that I took the writing classes.
Seconding the suggestions of criminal justice or criminology (the former is considered less rigorous than the latter) with a few courses in journalism and communication.
