I was wondering what your opinions are on using the slang term MacGyver as a verb in the college essay? The tone of my essay is laid back since my Common App essay is more serious. Specifically, would colleges know the meaning of MacGyver? Do you?

I don’t know what it means, but I’ve heard of it. I had to urban dictionary it… I’d say you should use it if its meaning can be understood fairly easily from context, or is not integral to understanding the sentence/your essay. I appreciate how it would have that nice impact on the tone.

I’m a huge fan of having the essay read as if you were speaking, not writing. So, sure. I don’t know what it mean either, but agree with quomodo - if the context gives it away, then sure.
