Hello, I graduated early from HS spring 2017. Started at uni this fall and I slacked off SUPER hard. didn’t show up to class for weeks at one point. now I’m making 4 Cs as the semester ends. I learned a lot about college life so I’m better prepared for next semester. but how is this going to affect my future?
You will need to attend all classes, submit assignments and papers on due dates, study daily, do well on tests, etc. College is your current career. Future careers depend on how well you did on this one. Worrying about current grades is not helpful and has an academic unknown impact on future jobs at this point.
If you learn from the situation, take steps to do better starting next term, and don’t squander this opportunity to get a post high school education it will probably have little impact on your overall future. The choice is yours.
What it means is that you have to be a perfect student now on. No more mistakes. Not just going to class but also Office Hours every week, study group every week, no partying during the week regardless of temptations. You may want to live in a quiet or substance free dorm to have a better environment. Over the break, read The naked roommate by Harlan Cohen.
if you are depressed -go see someone.
When I went to college (30 years ago) I thought as long as I pass and don’t get kicked out. I was in nursing school. So I did pass and made mostly Cs and a few Bs.
Now 30 years later- I started looking into going back to school. Guess what? All those Cs -they still count. Grad school doesn’t want a bunch of Cs and I found out much to my chagrin that Vo-Tech doesn’t want them either. Not for the competitive allied health programs. So my Cs are coming back to haunt me. I am allowed to retake some -but not all.
Your choices today -they may effect you 30 years from now. I would love to go back to my 19 year old self and tell her that.
Go to class. Go to office hours, Go to study groups, start using quizlet.
Assuming you go for 4 years, 1 semester with a 2.0 average will be roughly 12.5% of your GPA.
So if your GPA is x for the next 8 semesters, your approximate final GPA will be
0.1252.0 + 0.875x.
If you run the table and get straight As, your final GPA will be 3.75.
If you get a B average in the rest of your college, your final GPA will be 2.875, roughly a B-.
If your are taking a class now such as a calculus class, you will be hampered by taking a follow on class that assumes that you learned the material well.
How this is going to affect your future depends on how important your grades are to your future.
