I’m a sophomore right now btw, I made it in as a transfer.

i got in to the Cinema school’s animation program but after going through 448 I realized how time intensive this process is.
8 hrs of work and 100 drawings for 8 seconds. fulfilling in a way yes, but so time consuming.

I dont know if i should transfer right now. I’m an art major atm and IMHO i think USC’s art school is… you get the point. its not like Im amazing, I just wanted to be awed you know in college by amazing people. … doesn’t happen too often.

I still wanted to stick to art school though because I sincerely enjoy the process and I want to become a character desingner/illustrator or something in the future. >.<

But cinema school… connections… best cinema school in the nation… and apparently it was really competitive to get into in general …gah. but so much work and possibly one more semester compared to art school (I can techincally graduate in december of 2009.) because I’ll be a jr going in.

Any opinions?

PS do cinema students really get better connections?

Sounds like a classic hard decision. You might want to get advice from others in the Cinema school animation major. They might let you know if, once you’ve mastered the basics, the production work gets any quicker or if this amount of time and effort is really standard for the profession. Also, is there an academic advisor in the department who can give you some guidance about the expected time commitment future courses require? You might also ask them some specific questions (like how many grads get placed and in which companies and at what starting salaries) to see how a USC animation degree leads to employment and what opportunities you could look forward to. Might give you something to strive for or you may find you don’t want to go in that direction. In either case, you might want to take a few more courses to see if you have a stronger feeling either way.

Good luck to you.

Thanks madbean for the input. I think I’m going to Animation after talking to the advisor today. :D

Yes, the cinema school does have connections. It’s quite amazing the number of people you have opportunities to meet just from sticking around after events, let alone the connections you will find in random places just by having the school’s name on your resume. If you want to work the system, you can hit a nice payoff.
