I am currently a freshman at a CCC; however, I took my first semester of college ever (fall) at a California State University, Northridge
College was fun… too fun… and I am that dumb freshman that prioritized partying and my social life over my grades (not to mention, but I also worked 30-40 hours a week). I took 12 units (4 classes), and ended up with a new low of a 1.0 GPA (2 Cs, 2 Fs). I’ve always been that guy in high school who didn’t have to try and ended up with a 4.0 GPA, and I didn’t track my grades throughout the semester and failed miserably. I didn’t balance my academics, work, and social life, and I have learned my lesson.
I decided to continue my education at a CCC; I took the required placement tests for Math and English, I took a winter session at this CCC, and managed to do OK. (1 A, 1 B–8 units)
I am now taking 17 units for spring semester, and I’m doing very well–I expect to get As in all my courses. I have reduced my hours to <20 hours a week, and I now have a steady balance between work and school.
I figured out what I want to do with my life, and I really want to transfer to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo majoring in Animal Science. So with an academic record that looks something like this, would I still be able to get in?:
Freshman Year:
(fall, at the CSU)
G.E. English (3 units): F
College Algebra (3): F
Sociology 1 (3):C
Music Appreciation (3): C
(winter at a CCC)
College Algebra (5): B
English 28 (remedial, 3 units): A
[spring (grades I WILL work hard for)]
Intro to Bio (4): A
G.E. Communications (3): A
English 101 (3): A
Trig (4): A
Film Studies (3): A
Will take about 38 more units to get all the prerequisite work done, so that’ll put me at 72 units when I apply to transfer. I have calculated the maximum GPA I can obtain, assuming I study hard and earn all As, and I can achieve a 3.46 GPA.
Some extracurriculars I have include:
Working part time (major related–veterinary assistant)
Pre-Vet club
Red Cross Blood Drive Coordinator
I really screwed myself over my first semester of freshman year of college, and I deeply regret it. I am taking school very seriously now, and I my goal is to join the transfer class for Fall 2018 of Cal Poly SLO.
