I messed up

So I’ve been going to community college for the passed year and a half, I’m four classes away from graduating with a 4.0 cumulative. I am an officer in the honor society, editor of the college newspaper, and president of the literary club. I want to go to Rutgers NB, unfortunately, I missed the Oct 1st deadline. Also, my essay got messed up and ,for some reason, every apostrophe an quotation mark came up as an upside down question mark! I emailed admissions about the problem.

Anyway, I’m 10 days late from the deadline, and now my essay has those stupid errors. How likely am I to get in? I really messed up.

What are you applying for? Are you taking CC classes while finishing up HS? Transfer to Rutgers? Or going to grad school at Rutgers?

The following is for Freshmen admissions:
October 1 is the deadline for Spring 2013 admissions. November 1 is the deadline for Fall 2013 EA, and December 1 for Fall 2013 RD.

For Transfer:
October 1 is the deadline for Spring 2013, and Feb 1 for Fall 2013.

For Grad School:
Each program has its own deadlines, and I saw deadlines of Dec 1 through Feb, depending.

So, worst case, you have to wait until the Fall to matriculate.

All the upside down ??? are the symbol for no-printable characters. Your Word Processor was using non-standard characters for the " and '. Usually that is when the WP is trying to put in “curly” quotes, vs. “straight” quotes. I’m guessing the Admissions Office is use to it, although it does make it harder to read. Maybe let them know you noticed the problem, and e-mail them a PDF, or mail them a printed copy.

I am 26 years old, graduated high school in 2004. I will have 65 credits and an associates degree in English, 4.0 cumulative GPA.

So I will be a transfer student. I was hoping to go to Rutgers NB and double major in journalism and English.

They allowed me to still apply. I was just wondering if being a 4.0 and an office in the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society would help me at all in this situation. I miss read the deadline and thought it was Nov 1st for the spring semester. I especially thought that because they posted the application on September 1st. Figured they’d give us more than just one month! :-(

Ask the Transfer Counselor at your CC to give Rutgers a call. Often they can smooth things over for the good applicants like you!

Does anyone know what all this means?

If you apply by 10/1, they will let you know by 12/7, and you have to enroll by 12/14.

They want your transcript, and anything thing else by 10/15.

They will process COMPLETE applications received after the due date as long as they have space.

Which term are you applying for: Spring 2013, or Fall 2013?

Spring 2013. I submitted the application today. I guess I’ll call them and ask what else they need, maybe I can just drive the documents over.

All I could really do is try and talk to an advisor or something and hope they can fit me in for next semester. I just wanted my essay to be good, so I took my time doing it. Now I just found out that as a transfer student, an essay was recommended but not required. My grades could have done all the talking a month ago :-(

The same thing happened to me… I don’t know why my apostrophes are getting replaced with upside down question marks. Did you end up getting in?

alexlittle, next time you have a question, just start a new thread if you don’t find the answer when you search. Don’t post to a thread from 2012.

You should just copy and paste from plain text format only document (ASCII). Word processors may be using hidden formatting characters that cause this problem. You should fix the problem before sending. Make sure to check the preview.
