I Met WildChild!!

WHO!!!

LOL (I have to add a few !!! to hit 10 characters)

Meeting other CCers: I might soon. WDJr is going to do some electrical design work for a CCer, and I’ll probably tag along. (It’s based on WDJr’s squirrel detector and deterrent system.)

Since the very early 1990s there has been an active urban folklore community that has generated thousands of personal meetings and several marriages. I had the privilege of attending one participant’s funeral that drew nearly 100 forumites to Pennsylvania from places as far as the United Kingdom and Southern California. I suspect that the reason there aren’t more CC personal get-togethers is that it is an anonymous board. AFU back in the day (1992-2000 or so) was nearly all “real names only.”

As long as I’m sort of thread drifting anyway, I originally posted here under my own name until I felt the need to “share” some things about my son’s school. Since I’m positive they could and would hold my opinions against my son, I created this ID and went under ground. Maybe after he graduates I’ll go public again.

EDITED: We’d be glad to meet CCers at Thai Ginger in Redmond for crab-fried rice (Dungeness crabs, rice, Thai seasoning, onions… mmm), or, you know, whatever else it is they serve.

Jym and MOWC…sounds so fun! I have actually met quite a number of CCers. Not gonna name 'em all but it has been fun.

I met Maize&Blue last year at Parent Weekend, but the funniest was when anxiousmom informed me that she had just hosted my daughter (who was participating on her daughter’s ultimate team for a tournament).

firefly,
I heard about that (behind the scenes  ). That’s so funny! But mum was the word 'til yout dd left, right?? Oh we parents have to be so careful not to mortify our kids.

Negatory on you getting the fake ID, jym- he thinks he can SELL it! (I reminded him about the seminars I give on identity theft…)

He starts his 2 Vandy classes today- along with his online Penn class that has been going on for several weeks. It’s always all or nothing… I think he prefers the academic overload to helping his sister plan her wedding, though.

Hopefully I’ll get to meet up with jym one of these days, since we live in the same “town” (if metro Atlanta can be called a town.) My kids, however, are comparatively boring.

We spent a nice day with Doddsmom and Doddsdad a year and a half ago. They aren’t around CC much anymore, but they have another child up and coming, so perhaps they’ll return. Of course Doddsdad will live in infamy on these boards, being the original proprietor of Sinners Alley.

Doddsdaughter was very funny about her opinions that mom and dad were meeting up with folks they met on the Internet! We got a tour of their lovely home, got to eat on post in an American restaurant (Chilis) and Doddsmom took me to the grocery store, while the others went to the PX and Baskin Robbins! Genuine treats for us in Germany.

And I’ve talked with Berurah via Skype. Does that count? And some email-with-pictures exchanges with a few, so I might recognize them on the street!

My S2 has met several offspring of other posters. (“Hey, my mom talks to your mom on some college website…”)

I am anticipating meeting some others, perhaps at Miami-Ohio’s orientation later this month. And S2 will be in Santa Barbara, Calif for most of the summer. I am hoping to get out there to visit, so if anybody is nearby, give me a holler!

Yes, binx, I mentioned to MOWC that you and I had talked about getting together for coffee. We need to get that on the calendar!

I laughed out loud when I saw the title of this thread. How funny. And here we are, all knowing exactly who you’re talking about!!! The internet is so amusing, isn’t it??? :)

“If they hadn’t scheduled both s’s graduations on the same !@@#$#$$% morning next May, I’d be there for sure next spring, but I think I am handling the HS graduation and DH is handling the college graduation. However, there is always the chance s#2 could end up at UNC (and he even mentioned Duke in passing today as well so I have no idea where his head is with all this college stuff). At any rate-- maybe Ill be able to meet you with the UNC- Duke crowd in the fall!! Who knows!”

jym - I still can’t believe the two graduations on the same day thing…you must feel so torn. Btw… I will keep you posted re: Top of the Hill. :)

jym626 and MoWC, That must have been fun! Funny that the two of you met - I have always thought that of all the posters here, the two of you are the ones I have a better than even chance of meeting IRL one day!! I almost made it down to your town this month too but shipping D away for her summer program interferes.

I’ve told the story here before of how I sat down at S’s previews last spring next to a charming young man and his family. When I heard where they were from I said, this may sound crazy, but do you post on a college forum called CC (I felt like I knew him already)? I stepped back at that point, they hit it off, one thing led to another and the boys became roommates in college and the closest of friends!

MoWC- Many congrats on your D’s engagement!

Roshke-
Please do let me know if/when you will be in town. It will be fun to get together with our mutual friends!

And I’d forgotten that story about your son!

I got to meet a CC student poster when visiting my Ds dorm- that felt odd, but I had a wonderful coffee and walk with some other CC moms when I was visiting D at her school and they lived nearby. It’s such a treat to meet and talk IRL.

We were at a national convention in spring of 05, with one kid per state as champs and during lunch, I realized who a few CC posters were from various states…and they were all kvetching about andison! Very sympathetic to him and still at that time hoping andison would get into his first round spring schools…considered him to be very deserving of getting off the waitlists…now I am sure they are all happy he is at MIT. I found it heartwarming that they were as keen on a happy outcome for andison as the parents on CC.

I met another poster last year while at my S#1’s college, which is relatively small. I was also with S’s #2 & 3 at the time and the other poster came up to me, looked at the 3 boys with me and said, “By any chance do you post on a forum called College Confidential?” I was was startled and didn’t know what to say, but then she quickly said, “I’m poster X,” and I admitted that she was correct. :)

How cool is that, a mom letting her son use a fake ID! Man, thats great lol

Well, bbecker- when we moved WildChild into the dorm, all the freshmen were comparing fake IDs. It falls into the category of “pick your battles”. My son is an older student, and I am well aware that college kids drink. Having a drink at a restaurant with his family seems pretty tame. I know others disagree, but this is my approach.

I met SoozieVT’s daughter! And she was an absolute pleasure … no surprise there!

MoWC: Excellent approach. I think there’s many more important things to be adamant on than not having alcohol under the (absurdly high) drinking age.
