Dear Selective Retention Committee,
My name is -------- and I am applying for re-admittance into Salem State University. I was placed on Academic Probation in the Spring of 2015 and was dismissed by failing to earn 66% of the attempted credits that semester. My goal, if I am re-admitted, is to graduate with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts so I can focus on a flexible and fair career path. While on Academic Probation: I plan to attend every class, read the syllabuses, set aside study time, visit professors during their office hours, make appointments with the writing center and reach out to study groups. I will chase the highest grades possible, focus on my time-management responsibilities, and be more active in the community.
Having a part-time schedule can still be challenging, although rewarding, so if I ever feel anxious or stressed I will make appointments with the Counseling and Health Services office. If I return to my 12 hr/week job at the —campus library—, I will make sure I prioritize my schoolwork in full so that my job does not interfere with my studies. It’s imperative that I don’t make the same mistakes as last time and to create a list of actions that will help with the flow of my day-to-day campus lifestyle. I’ll create a weekly schedule that is diverse enough with an emphasis on structure with minimal distractions, that has breaks for recharging and non-negotiable hours for sleeping. If I truly want to be productive, I need to commit to a written schedule instead of promising to follow an imaginary one.
( → is this even relevant? ) While I wrote this paper, I took a trip into Boston and stayed in ------ to visit a sibling. After they graduated college it took working for a few jobs and 4, going on 5, apartments to find their bearings. Staying in Boston for the weekend helped me see that being independent requires a positive attitude and a lot of responsibility. It’s important to be brave, confident and intuitive as long as I have reachable goals.
If I am re-accepted into Salem State University under Academic Probation, I will make graduating my biggest priority. I want to be able to allow room for growth and success into my life going forward. I became passionate for Public History and Geology over the years but I understand that I need to follow a strict format to maintain my grades; I don’t believe it would be a good idea to jump into those classes as a re-admitted student. Therefore, I want to choose a Bachelor of Liberal Arts for my undergraduate degree because it ensures that I can be a part of the community as well as grow a skillset important for living in society. If I wanted to branch into other career options in the future, I will be able to do so afterwards.
Salem is a town rich with History and marketplaces, I’m proud to say that I made some of the best memories here and would be very grateful if I was re-admitted back into Salem State. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
Sincerely,
-----
