i need advice on letters of recommendation?

in June i will be done with my BA in international political science and plan on taking a year off. during the year of i will attempt to get a job that can help me with my career goals. i cant find such a job and i am stuck at McDonald i will apply for fall 2013. the schools i am looking at involve either law or urban and regional planning. my biggest concern is ensuring i can get letters of recommendation and thus i have questions for you.

Q1 at this time i am looking at 4 possible law schools and 3 grad schools (masters in urban and regional planning). i also may have 4 possible letter writers. if i do decide to go to back to school will i need to get as many of 4 different letters (1 for all law schools) from each person or can i get away with one from each person?

Q2 how soon should i get the letters?

Q3 how should i go about getting the letters without seeming like a burden to them?

thanks for any help you provide.

as far as I know, professors write just one letter and use it for different schools. so it’s not really a big burden for them, unless they are famous and have to write letters for many students. as to Q2, graduate application websites generally open in fall 2012, so you have to wait for a long time. it might be a good idea to keep contacts with professors to keep them from forgetting you.

You probably want to talk to your professors about letters before you graduate; this way, they can draft a letter while they still remember you and then submit it once you actually need it.
