I went to the university of iowa this past summer to a summer journalism workshop for broadcasting

Im planning on double majoring in Music Performance (voice) and Broadcast journalism. So im hoping that my singing audition can help me in the door in some of the super reach places

Im applying to 7 colleges

University of Kansas (my backup)
University of Illinois at Urbana-Cham
New York University
University of North Carolina at Chapel hill
University of Texas at Austin
Northwestern
Syracuse

If you could respond that would mean so much to me
<3

University of Kansas–safe match
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign–slight reach
New York University–slight reach
University of North Carolina at Chapel hill (OOS)–reach
University of Texas at Austin (OOS)–slight reach
Northwestern–reach
Syracuse–slight reach

No offense, but your choices are kind of strange. All schools in the top 50 or so except Kansas, which ranks about 97th overall.

Unfortunately your grades and courses say that you should be looking at some mid-national universities and some mid-LACs that specialize in theatre and chorale performances, and not schools in the top 50 and not schools below around 80 in the rankings.

Schools like Muhlenberg, Indiana University at Bloomington, University of Miami (Florida), American University, Penn State, Ithaca, and Oberlin all have strong musical theatre programs and would admit you (be matches)or be very slight reaches for you.

I’d also leave Syracuse and Kansas on your list–and maybe NYU and USC (slight reaches that would be worth pursuing considering your considerable background in this field and their strong programs in both musical theatre and broadcast journalism.) I’d drop Texas, North Carolina, Illinois, and Northwestern.

Also, Indiana and Ithaca (see above) both have strong journalism programs as well as strong musical theatre programs.

P.S. I’ve listed about 11 schools here–which, obviously, is kind of a lot. I’m not suggesting you apply to all of them, but I do suggest you choose about 6 or 7 or so at least and apply to those (and make sure that at least 3 are matches and 1 (Univ of Kansas) is a safety.)

Good luck.

Your ACT is at the bottom of NYU’s middle 50. I’d up it to a mid reach. And they don’t have a broadcast journalism major (although you can major in television/radio).

Also: I don’t think you can major outside of your school at NYU. So if you were a broadcast journalism major you couldn’t be a vocal performance major.

And then there’s the actually being admitted for vocal performance, the odds of which are super low (admit rate is like 5%-10%).
