I need DVD recommendations...

Can anybody recommend somewhat recent DVD releases that an 11 year old boy might enjoy? I also need some DVD recommendations for an 18 year old boy.

We never go to movies – I am totally Hollywood illiterate. J. Lo could knock on my door and I wouldn’t know her.

THANKS!!!

I’m more into music than drama, so here are my recs: The Cream reunion DVD is great. So is David Bowie’s “Reality Tour” DVD. The DVD about recording genius Tom Dowd (“The Language of Music”) is also excellent.

11 year old: Madagasgar or March of the Penguins. Star Wars III?

Need more info for the 18 year old…

For the 18 year old I would go with classic college comedies: Old School, Animal House, Road Trip, Porkys, Stealing Stanford etc

Napoleon Dynamite. My 9-year-old loves it, but, then, he wanted to be Elton John for Halloween.

I can’t think of current releases for an 18 year old, buy my older boy loved “Amazon Women on the Moon” when he was that age. I haven’t seen it, myself, though. He still loves it. He also was a big fan of Dumb and Dumber and Amadeus. I sent Amadeus to my 18 year old nephew recently–he’d never seen it.

My current 19 year old made me watch Aliens the other night, which I hadn’t seen before. Apparently that one is popular with that age group–though, again, it is OLD.

Another couple of old ones for the 11 year old, if he hasn’t already seen them–Galaxy Quest and of course, the Back to the Future Movies, and also, any James Bond movies.

In the vein of “Amazon Women” - both would love “Mystery Science Theater 3000” - you might have to search a little to find the DVDs, but I’m sure they exist.

Thumbs up on GalaxyQuest for 11 year old! Also, my S could rewatch Emperor’s New Groove regularly at 11.

The Right Stuff and Apollo 13 are older releases that are both educational and compelling viewing for. Might even be interesting for 11 year old.

For the 18, Wedding Crashers ;). Crash is also very good, albeit, a completely different kind of movie than Wedding Crashers.

:)

What genre (drama, comedy, cartoonish, scary, etc) do they like in movies??

My 11 yr. old son loved the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Hellboy, all the Harry Potter movies, Nepolian Dynamite, Evolution, the Terminator movies,

Try looking at dvdplanet.com
They have a recent releases section.

Also, if you have a blockbuster near you, they sell movies (pre-played though I think). Even if you don’t want to buy something pre-played, just going and looking at them may help you find something that you can buy brand new somewhere else.

Last Christmas we bought our son the Chronicles of Narnia, the BBC version. He’s a bit younger than your son, but with the new Disney movie driving up interest in the drama, it might even be enjoyable to, or at least satisfy the curiosities of, an 11 year old.

All the Indiana JOnes movies, old Star Wars movies, anything starring Adam Sandler, Airplane, Spaceballs (and any other Mel Brooks).

These were all favs of S when younger. If yours is a history buff, he might like Gettysburg, which was S’s absolute favorite for a long time.

Thanks everybody!

The 11 year old is my nephew, and I have no idea what he already has, which is why I thought new releases would be a safer bet. Last year I bought him Napolean Dynamite and he loved that.

The 18 yr old is my son, and I’m just looking for a stocking stuffer. I know they watch tons of movies in the dorm - and when I asked him where he gets them (like, do they go to the library?!) he said they just belong to kids. So I figured I can’t go too wrong there. Of course he has a bunch of movies (I don’t know what) but he hasn’t bought any recently I’m sure.

I’ll bounce some of these off my niece (she’s my spy). Thanks again!

Oh, sorry (slaps head)! I just realized you said new releases!

These all came out since beginning of the month:

Airplane (Don’t Call Me Shirley Edition)

40 Year Old Virgin

Producers (2-Disc Deluxe Edition) Gene Wilder/Zero Mostel Version

Dukes of Hazzard movie

Polar Express

Bad News Bears Remake

…Seems like slim pickings to me…

How about Lost, the complete first season on DVD? It’s a huge hit at our house.

FWIW, my 16 year old son has specifically requested Wedding Crashers and 40 Year Old Virgin (which is what I hope he’ll be - just kidding!).

My friend’s 20 yr old son and his male friends loved wedding crashers. From the discussion that took place the guys loved it and the females all thought it was stupid.
