Okay I’m a freshman at USC so I moved in my dorm at the start of the spring semester and hated every second that I was in the dorm, I was home every other day and every weekend of that semester because I couldn’t stand living up there. So the fall semester has now started and I still hate it just as much but I couldn’t move back home because I had to complete my full year to be able to transfer. So I just need help and advice on how to just get through this last semester on campus before I can move back home. I live in the middle of nowhere so living in the big city is absolutely terrible for me I just need some advice on how to make this semester go by as fast as possible so I can commute next year
From your posting history you are at USCarolina. Columbia is not what most people would consider a big city. It sounds like a bad case of homesickness. Have you sought counseling?
Also you switched spring and fall semester on your original post.
It doesn’t matter if Columbia, SC Isn’t what most people consider a big city, it is a big city to you. The fact that urban life and dorm life isn’t a match for you is perfectly acceptable.
How to get through…honestly count the days and go home on the weekends. Although it is always a good idea to try to get involved. If it’s nature and animals you enjoy, maybe you can find a part time job related in some way that you can enjoy? Although the surroundings are not for you, surely there must be some people you like. Try to enjoy the time you spend with them. Also, focus on the classes that you like. In short, focus on the positive and the end of the semester will be here before you know it.
But I will also say to keep an open mind. Although this all feels like it isn’t a fit, people usually do adjust and you just might find yourself liking the life you think you don’t want, so don’t close any doors.
Good luck!
I’d suggest trying to find off-campus housing with friends. Also, one of the worst things you can do if you are living with a dorm is go home more often than once a month. It actually makes homesickness much, much worse, and as often as you were going home, may be the reason that you couldn’t properly adjust to dorm life.
The library seems pretty peaceful. Sit outside (when it’s not freezing like it is now) for a while and look at/listen to the fountain and see if that is calming. Maybe spend time studying in there if your dorm is just “too much” for you at times.
While the Strom is at a busy intersection, once you’re inside you can get some exercise (which will make you feel less stressed).
When the weather is nicer, walk up to the State House and enjoy the public spaces. Think of it as kind of an oasis. Maybe invite a friend or two to come along for the walk.
Some kids are sad right now because they are “stuck” in cold, small towns during a snowy winter. At least you won’t freeze in Columbia. So just hang in there!
“I was home every other day and every weekend of that semester” had to have some affect on your being able to adjust. For this semester, why don’t you challenge yourself by setting up a schedule of how often you will go home so that by the end of the semester you can feel as if you gave it your best shot. Try to stretch out the time between trips home. When other kids in your dorm don’t get a chance to spend time with you, it makes you seem unapproachable and there are probably many students who want to get to know you better but never get the opportunity if you are never around. Good advice above… spend time over at the library and gym.
My DD hated the dining hall so she finished the year and then moved sophomore year to an on campus apartment where she makes her own food.
What do you hate about the dorms? Can you live somewhere else on campus? off campus?
Oh my gosh, you’re never going to adjust to dorm life, you haven’t even given it a shot. Do your parents make you go home? The weekends are a time for making friends! I understand going back maybe once a month or once every couple months if it’s close by but you can’t live with your parents forever. You might as well practice some independence while it’s being paid for!
