Michigan State University recognizes that an assortment of interests, viewpoints, and life experiences are important in student learning and enhance the university community. Describe an experience, passion, or characteristic that illustrates what you would contribute to the MSU community and how this will add to the overall richness of campus life.

this is only the start of it. i just want someone to give me pointers, i dont know if im putting too much attention to the folklorico and not on myself.

For the past six years, folklorico has been the foundation to my educational success. It is a program unlike any other in the united states that has helped shape me into the person I am today. It has shown me the importance of working as a team, the true meaning of family, and most importantly, it has taught me to be proud of my heritage, and the value of culture.
Every year, in the fall and spring, the La Joya school district has their mariachi and folklorico concerts. The three weeks former to each concert are always the roughest. A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, our director Rolando Rodriguez constantly reminds us. Everyone in the group must give it their all in practice, because every little detail must be precise, even a single beat missed is largely noticeable.

I would think it would be to your benefit to focus more on how your personal value system will enable you to contribute to advancements in your field of study. You should be specific.

Statements about culture and diversity should generally be made from the perspective of embracing other cultures that AREN’T your own, and how experiences with outside cultures have shaped your outlook. Talking about being proud of your own heritage and culture can come across as closed-minded.

I think a stronger essay would incorporate different cultures you’ve experienced, how their values differ, and talk about the value of experiencing a variety of perspectives.

I changed it to this. It isnt done yet, but i feel i am still making the same mistakes. if so, how can i shift the attention to me, rather than the actual program?

For the past six years, folklorico has been the foundation to my educational success. It is a program unlike any other in the United States that helps maintain the culture and heritage of Latin American countries. Folklorico has given me an unforgettable experience, from performing, to travel, and just having a second family that you can look to for support whenever you need it.
As a group, we have performed in cities throughout Texas, such as Buc Days in Corpus Christi, Texas, or the International Festival in Houston, Texas. The most important performance, so far, has been our most recent. On February 21, 2013 we had the amazing privilege to dance at the Presidential Inaugural parade for President Barack Obama. This performance gave us the chance not only to represent our high school, and the state of Texas, but the entire Hispanic culture.
