I’ll be visiting my kid who is attending a college somehow close to JHU in Baltimore. I found an Airbnb that looks very nice around this area. I don’t have the exact location now. The Airbnb is located in the middle of the Historic Old Goucher and Charles Village. Is anyone familiar with this area? is it safe and walkable?
Update II: the unit is on N Calvert Street between E 25th St and E 24th St.
If you are referring to crime, you can look for reported crimes in Baltimore at Public Crime Map .
The area you are referring to appears to be just south of Johns Hopkins University, which may be more familiar to many visitors of these forums than Maryland Institute College of Art.
Baltimore can vary greatly just by a few blocks so it’s going to be very location dependent, even in the same neighborhood. Id make sure you have the actual street address of the Airbnb and then do a street view and virtually walk around in maps. Generally that area, especially closer to campus, is totally fine and walkable during the day. I would not walk alone as a woman after dark and would use a ride share.
It looks like it is near Charles street. There are buses that run up and down that street, right by the Art Museum and the art school. It is very safe and I took it a lot a few years ago when I was staying downtown but attending an event at Towson University.
However, as someone said, it may not be safe just a block away. I’d walk it in daylight but not at night, especially alone. JHU is the beginning of the really nice neighborhoods along Charles street. Walking around the school is safe, but a lot of the streets are pretty dark at night.
I went to school in downtown Baltimore (eons ago) and we didn’t walk from school to parking alone. Walk along the well lit main street? Sure, but not a block away where our parking garage was. The bus is cheap and can get you downtown or north to Towson.
The unit is not on Charles Street but maybe 2 blocks away. The unit is on N Calvert Street between E 27th St and E 24th St.
Twoinanddone, thank you for the advice and heads up. I"ll make sure o walk in daylight only as I’ll be walking alone. If I’m late at night, I"ll take uber.
It’s so helpful to know about all the precautions you took walking to a parking lot even if so close to school. Even though it was not recent, the same caution is needed around dark streets at night.
As in most cities, crime in Baltimore is down significantly in the last few years—but Baltimore has seen among the steepest declines. The area you’re talking about, Charles Village, has long been a lively and relatively safe area. Take the same precautions you’d take in any city, particularly at night, but I don’t think you need to be particularly concerned.
That’s a little iffy- Calvert st has a a lot of car traffic (although not a lot of pedestrians) so is pretty safe but in general, gets a little worse the further south you go- 27th st or above would be better than 24th or below. I wouldn’t call it unsafe, but it might be a little scruffy. You could walk north and west towards Hopkins and you will quickly be in student territory- plenty walkable and lots of people around. Charles Village = Hopkins neighborhood, Old Goucher= not quite as nice depending on how used you are to urban areas.
catmom94, thank you for all the detailed info and warning. I helps me to prepare. The unit is between 24th and 25th so it’s closer to the more questionable area. I’ll take precautions to be out during daylight and take uber once it’s dark. I really don’t know Baltimore so I"m learning.
The unit is not on Charles Village but close. it’s on Old Goucher on N Calvert close to E 25th St. Based on catmom94, the area is a little iffy but it seems to be safe. I’ll be cautions. Thank you for your comment.
