So I only took one AP test this year (AP Chem). My schedule wouldn’t allow me to take AP Gov/AP Comp Pol as a class, so I was in the honors version, which unfortunately doesn’t prepare you for the test. In terms of maximum possible APs from our school, there are 5 possible AP tests that can be taken prior to senior year - AP Bio, AP Chem, AP Stat, AP Gov, AP Comp Pol. They happen to pretty much mutually exclude each other in terms of scheduling, so the most a kid has taken is really four (bio, chem, gov/comp pol). However, this can only be done if the kid isn’t in a music class AND in a specific foreign language (all others would prevent the schedule from working).

My class schedule is as rigorous as possible given the circumstances, but how much of a disadvantage will I be in terms of college admissions because I only have one AP, though it will most likely be a 5? I’m planning on applying to top-tier schools.

Should I compensate by dropping my music class and taking as many APs as I can senior year (ie 7)? Moreover, if my GC does check off that “most rigorous” course box as well as mention how much the schedule screwed me, would colleges be understanding? I’m from a region that isn’t too heavy on APs as you can see, with the 5 APs I listed only possible junior year or above. The problem is, the school profile lists all the AP classes we offer but doesn’t mention the prerequisites for them…and its the prereqs that kill us, since we can only take APs junior/senior year.
