Cars. I will be super thrilled when they are all automated. Would never want to buy one again and would happily Lyft forever. I could read from door-to-door, go out for drinks with a perpetual designated driver, and I would convert my garage to additional living space.

Dental work. Yeah, it’s mostly my fault my teeth are horrible, but paying thousands of dollars for a new crown or whatever annoys me no end.

Unexpected maintenance bills, without a doubt. And it’s always something!

And medical bills. It’s not as big of a deal now, as when my kids were growing up. Try paying 10-15x your hourly pay just to see if they have the strep or flu! Or a 5 min conversation with the allergist, so he will renew your prescription. Not to mention waiting 2-3 hours just to see them for 5-10 min! Or being guilted by the ortho for an MRI that cost 1.5 months of your take-home pay - that showed absolutely nothing (as you suspected). UGH!!!

This thread is getting me all worked up and angry this morning!!! LOL… Must breathe and focus on something else…

I’m guessing you are in motion control shoes or Hokas? The former (no matter which brand) are always pricier than the neutral shoes, or even stability. I used to be able to get 750 miles out of my shoes - with 3-4 pairs of different ages in rotation - but now am more like 500 miles. Partially age, and partially I don’t think shoes are made to last like they used to. It’s how they are a lot lighter than they used to be. I notice my soles wearing off stairclimber leaving dust like particles. It’s easy to tell when the shoes are orange or pink!

I also go through 4 pairs a year, but I rarely ever pay full price. I usually go through runningwarehouse.com (always has free shipping), but you can even find them on sale on amazon or other places. about 1-2x year the shoe manufacturers will put out the new models and the old are discounted $20-30. Then, if you are lucky, they go on clearance for another $20-30, but then sizes are VERY limited. If I see them on sale, I’ll buy 2-3 pairs and leave them in the closet.

I’m about to shell out thousands of dollars for dead/dying tree removal. Not only is it expensive, but it isn’t even something I will “enjoy” every day (like something new or improved inside the house).

Great idea for a thread. Love the responses. I resonate with the home things like tree removal (you’re actually LOSING a good thing, not getting a good thing!) or things like a new roof.

My livelong gripe: feminine products. The monthly supplies. I used to gripe that we are penalized for being women and that the government should provide these things!

I hate spending money on “bread service” at a restaurant. Bread used to be free. Describing the bread, and the plate of herbs floating in olive oil, doesn’t make the charge easier to swallow.

Time to look for a new physician, since it looks like this one is just trying to run up bills.

Anything that is overpriced due to being offered by a monopoly or oligopoly, especially if it is a necessary item. For example, eyeglasses in many cases.

This is my struggle with purchasing the bras! They aren’t seen!

Do those qualify as a, “necessary,” expense?

Car insurance. It increases every time I get a bill, while I drive fewer miles since retirement making cost feel more painful.

A hidden cost that costs more in the US than in many other places: credit card payment fees.

Interesting, I will have to look into this…I did think the midsole also ‘wears out’ after 300-400 miles. My knees won’t allow me to run anymore but I still walk 3+ miles/day and regularly change my shoes (Hoka running shoes) every 300 miles.

So, this is insurance fraud. Did you ask to have this taken off?

Ours definitely bring their own……but once a year, during the summer, when it’s really hot, we will put out snacks and a cooler of drinks for the lawn maintenance crew, and anyone else who happens to stop by that day (UPS, USPS, pest control etc).

I hate spending money on lawn care, shipping, and the dentist. And I refuse to buy bottled water unless absolutely necessary.

my hair. Its necessary every 3 months now. I dont have enough grey to go all the way, and I am back in the job market, so I might even need to have it done sooner. A color and cut can run 200$

That’s me! I just do not enjoy spending large amounts of money. If it’s under $25 I will usually not be bothered by it but more than that and I start to get annoyed. My husband is similar. We will spend if we need to but we don’t enjoy a fancy restaurant with $50 entrees because we hate spending that much money for food. I do not buy $75 bras or replace my walking or running shoes even yearly. I cut my own hair and I love to shop at thrift stores or consignment shops. Just got two pairs of great looking jeans for $10. I have a good friend who has a weakness for blowing $200 on shoes or boots but unless I get a bargain I just feel bad every time I look at my feet. I have a few places I can shop and spend like $30 on a winter coat that would usually go for $300 and then I feel great wearing that coat and I wear it for years and years.

Healthcare is the worst! Don’t get me started going down that road. My husband and the kids keep talking about moving to another country where it’s not so screwed up.
