Creative ways to make me pay more at the restaurants. I specifically see it on restaurant bills when we eat in San Francisco. 18% health fee on my restaurant bill? Do you expect me to tip on top of this?

The bread service drives me crazy.

We have a restaurant in town that charged for a loaf of bread. Never went back. Stupid for a locally run restaurant in a small town.

I think the issue with the colonoscopy is that it’s covered 100% unless they find a polyp, then your insurance deductible applies. Another stupid rule. The colonoscopy works as it’s supposed to and then you fall under your deductible?

The smallest amount that I absolutely hate to pay anytime it shows up is a credit card “convenience” fee. I really hate when it’s something school related and the only option is to pay it online with the additional ~$3+ added. I will go out of my way to avoid paying these fees. My thinking is that if it is that much more “convenient” for you to only allow online payments, you should be paying the fee instead of me.

The first time I was charged for bread was in Italy. They bring you plate of bread and you suppose to send it back if you don’t want to be charged for bread. Only few restaurants do it here and it mostly steakhouses

My problem with the bread is that you are seated and then asked if you would like bread without being told there is a charge for that.

I also hate having to buy running shoes so often. It absolutely is a necessity, though, as my hips and knees will attest. If you overpronate, wearing the proper shoe for YOUR anatomy & replacing it as needed (my body tells me when) is the key to avoiding joint issues. I do buy online at discounters when possible, but I learned my lesson about buying anything other than the shoe I was fitted with that way … I once bought the next iteration of a shoe, and I actually thought I needed a knee replacement due to the pain I started having. I returned to my local running store and found out that the changes in the shoe made it the wrong shoe for me. So I guess you can say I hate spending the money, but I will continue to do it a couple times a year … and I am glad that I can afford to do so.

What really grinds me is spending money on carpet cleaning. Not only is it expensive, but it’s a pain to prepare for it. So much to get out of the way. I am overdue for a cleaning.

I also hate spending money on hotels. The price keeps increasing, but the service keeps decreasing. It’s a cost I can avoid by not traveling, but there are times a trip is a necessity rather than a luxury.

I have learned from my PCP at my physical exam two months ago that I would be charged extra if I brought up other medical issues during a physical exam.

She warned me ahead of time and I brought up my back pain, We discussed a referral to a physiatrist. Instead of paying $20 for physical eaxm deductible, , I was charged $60 for “other issues”.
I don’t like it but, at least, I knew it before I brought it up.

I also hate to pay a lot more for a comprehensive blood test when it used to be totally covered by my insurance. My lovely PCP said she skipped a Vitamin D test because it was not medically necessary for me and it has a high co-payment. I really appreciate my PCP.

Agreed! Cracked a crown 2 weeks ago and the new one will be $1800! That said, the old one was 22 years old, so it had a good life I guess.

The charge will go on my Costco Citi card for cash back. I have always wondered why there wasn’t a cash back card for medical and dental that gave more than 1%!

I hate spending money on utilities, electricity, water, etc. The rates are just ridiculous.

That would be one of the few places where the credit card interchange fees are obvious to the buyer (fuel stations are another with separate cash and card prices).

But usually when the extra credit card fees are charged online, there is an option to pay by electronic bank transaction without the fee.

Tea. There are different types of coffee that I can’t make at home but paying for a cup of tea (particularly the ordinary varieties) when I am out is a waste of money.

I paid my $6400 medical deductible on my Costco card. Really would have like to had more than 1% rewards.

I can’t even fathom a deductible that high.

I switched HMO groups in 2022 to see a particular specialist who was not available on my earlier group. This PCP was the only one in the HMO group I wanted who had openings for new patients as a PCP. I am starting to understand why he may be the only one with openings. I do plan to switch to a different PCP.

I left a message with billing in which I did not directly accuse him of insurance fraud, but left enough details for the billing rep to draw conclusions. Her previous message said to contact the physician directly for further interaction, so I don’t have high expectations, but I’ll wait for a response before proceeding further.

I used to obsess over the smallest costs. We gotten into a better place through plenty of work and planning.

I am not going to let small to smallish amounts stress me out. If I am being charged something I don’t like I will pay this time, take note and find way to avoid it in the future. We do put in the work to find the best value.

There are somethings you just can’t avoid. I really prefer not to have to pay car repairs. But part of it is the hassle of not having a car for a period of time.

I think we all hit a point with certain items where it is just too much and I am not going to pay that rate any more. For me it was sporting events. I would love to go to a lot of sport events, but the cost is just too high for what I perceive as the value so I don’t go. I am not going to get mad I am just going to find something else to do or stay home and watch it on TV.

Gas and oil changes. We now only have EVs.

Getting my hair coloured but I’m not ready to go grey yet and don’t want to do it myself. Still I spread them out as much as possible.

If the PCP is part of a large group practice, you may want to check at the beginning of each month, since some group practices update availability monthly (perhaps when some patients leave due to changing insurance plans, which tends to occur on month boundaries).
