“I really hate spending money on ________.” How would you complete this sentence?

We have Hilton Diamond status because DH traveled so much for work; the valet parking fee used to be covered under the benefits at most of the hotels. Like everything else the perks keep being reduced I guess. We don’t belong to a church, but we put a sort of tithe line item each month to donate to charities or fundraisers for friends/acquaintances in need. I love to leave surprise tips for people we meet along the way, but tipping + a hefty fee for 10 minutes of service and 8 hours of parking seems a bit over the top.

A “cash tip” or a “no-crash tip” ?

I definitely pay a nice “no-crash” tip :joy:

How about a resort fee at a hotel that is required? We were attending a wedding…not using the pool, gym, and other resort amenities. We still had to pay a hefty resort fee. And it was not possible to have this waived. Why wasn’t it just part of the room charge?

Exactly! I thought this used to be just part of their package.

Thought there had been a plan proposed to get rid of resort and junk fees?

Junk fees, yes. Resort fees presumably are for things you use.

Another thing I paid for and hated doing so. Stayed at a Hilton in Denver. They had a HUGE, and I mean HUGE open parking lot…and charged by the day to park there. It wasn’t a huge amount…$10 a day or something like that. But still, it would have been a nice thing for them to have included at no cost.

Without getting political, both types of fees were under review (especially if, as stated, the resort services are not being used). Our family is in the middle of planning a trip to Hawaii and several hotels (“resorts”) advertise that there are no additional resort fees. Likely those fees are rolled into the daily room cost, but at least its not an additional add-on.

My theory is that the resort charges are just a game to make the rates looking lower for online searches / comparison.

In Waikiki Beach, the fee (including water toy rental) had gone up during covid $50/night per room…. x6nights! Thankfully I had a printout of the AAA stating that the fee we expected was $35/night. Still painful, but at least we had been made aware.

A month ago I wanted to go to a Ballet, it was no where near selling out so I tried to buy my ticket at the door in order to avoid the extra fees. When I arrived they handed me an I pad to purchase my own ticket. There was no way to pay in cash or avoid the fees. It was so annoying and I may not go back to see one because I felt cheated.

Airport (well near-airport) parking. Hubby insists on covered parking at USAirport, so even pricier (but admittedly I like being picked up last by shuttle, dropped off first). We do use AAA for a discount. After a long trip, we roll our eyes at the bill, but then we add “at least we don’t have any pets to board”.

Yeah, I admit I hate spending money on parking and being driven. I will drive over paying for a driver most times.

We park remotely and shuttle to the airport for short trips but on very busy flying days, or for longer trips or crazy days, the driver is an expense well worthwhile. Our guy is expensive, and we know it, but I don’t care. He saved us bigtime when we both broke bones skiing last year. That is a luxury I appreciate. While there are things I don’t like to pay for, that is not one of them!!

eta: we use one of the busiest airports and the remote lots are often full and crowded and the shuttles are slow.

Why did this now just show up in my feed? I am cheap and splurgy at the same time.

I really hate spending money on home projects I can DIY. I’m pretty handy and can find instructions for plumbing (not the gross stuff), tech/electronics, and some car fixes online at a fraction of the cost to hire someone. And I find it fun!

H goes to all the free events/museum days in our tourist city – and there’s a lot. No thank you. I hate crowds. Please get me a good table/seat at the best venues for concerts and plays. (And close parking.)

My friend refers to this as, “Fancy Frugal.”

That’s how my my friends would refer to me! (At least to my face )

I do not like paying for fancy food at expensive restaurants. I am a “eat to live” person, not a “live to eat” person and the gourmet meal just doesn’t seem worth it.

I’m OK with fancy meals if those meals are something I can’t make at home easily like sushi. I hate to pay for something I can make myself… possibly even better, like steak or lasagna.

This is so me! I will hem and haw over the “purple price tag” items at Marshalls/TJ Maxx (all you bargain shoppers will know what those are ) yet if someone asks me to fly to Europe on a whim, I am all in!

Staying on topic, I really hate those “service fees” at hotels. We had 14 weddings in the past 2 years (many of which required travel) and encountered some outrageous fees! Painful for me!

@BunsenBurner - I’m with you on the fancy meals are fine to pay for if I can’t make it. H can make an amazing steak at home so he hates to pay high prices for a steak if we eat out. I don’t make my own sushi, but I do love it and will pay for very good sushi.

We just had a really upscale Italian restaurant open in our upscale mall by our house. I had a good friend that went there and her take on it was why would I pay $30-$40 for pasta with sauce that I can make just as good at home! She did say the decor and bar are really nice, so I think H and I will just go for a drink.
