I Regret my past college decisions

I need to talk.

Alright, here I am about to go into Fall 2026. I have been doing college since Summer 2022. I started out as a DE Student at my community college seeking to Major into film production (AS). I would later go on as a Early Admission student (meaning full time at community college) still going as a Film Major. everything was going routine until the end of Spring 2023 when I was gonna switch over to radio and television upon finding out that such program existed. However, that fell through after learning the production classes were at a campus my parents did not permit me to go citing how dangerous it was located. As a result, I was forced to change majors. I ended up changing to Graphic Design (AS). I skipped Summer 2023 and went into Fall 2023. I was granted a first year scholarship. However, halfway into that term, I lost interest over Computer programming and right at the end of the Fall term, I dropped altogether (While i couldnt drop drop, I stopped attending classes and doing work). I Ended up skipping Spring 2024 to get myself together and did Summer 2024 with the new major of IOT Applications (AS). Summer and Fall 2024 went fine however, I wanted to leave IOT and go into Business App. Programming as I didnt like the IOT Program. However, at the end of the term, I didnt want to do anymore community college. I ended up finishing up Fall 2024 with no issues but 2025 by pressure of my parents would be an add n drop game and spam change majors (Summer 2025 I wanted to pursue Cybersec (AS) and than Fall 2025 that changed to AA Computer Science and than AA Business Admin. and than AS Business Admin). However, I did not do altogether Spring 2026. During that time, I fell in love with Criminal Justice. Currently AS but will change to AA so I can go to a higher institute to do a Bach. I successfully did Summer 2026 with 2/4 classes completed. The other 2 I dropped them and will take in Fall 2026 as in 1 class, the professor was trash and the other one, the curriculum was hard.

However, the weight of making all these crazy decisions prior to CJ has finally caught up to me. As you know, When you do an AA, you have to transfer to another institution upon completion of the AA. College A is right around the corner from where I live and I have a desire to join their Honours College but I need a 3.8 (Im currently at a 3.3 and will project to going to a 3.5/3.6 if i get pure A’s in the Fall and spring classes (and summer 2027 if its needed. Im not sure yet). My community college’s honour program is only for first-year students. same is said for the presidential scholar’s (it is to note I had a 3.7/3.8 GPA in High school). Unfortunately, 2 great opportunities wasted away never to get it back. I almost teared up while driving to my PO Box from Costco.

I really want to recover and make the most of it moving forward but I feel like theirs nothing available and that its too late.

Need advice and thoughts. All Appreciated!

The past is past. One doesn’t need an Honors College to succeed. Many really smart and top kids avoid them because they don’t like the requirements.

Are you sure you want to go to school ? Can you afford a four year school ? Know what you want to major in ?

Nothing is wasted because everyone has a chance to set their future. It starts now. Look forward. Not back.

Good luck.

Hmmmm, I want to do a Bachelor’s but… Which one I should proceed with? AS or AA? I want to do Criminal Justice (In progress)

You likely have options - the two you mentioned or transferring to a four year school. Talk to your CC counselor.

But i wouldn’t worry about a 3.3-3.6 or 3.8 and an Honors College.

Look at what you can afford. Talk to your counselor.

If you have the right mindset, you can get back on the horse and move forward.

I have seen this happen also. One daughter was in the honors college at her university and just dropped it because it wasn’t adding anything that she cared about.

my parents pay for the classes but still, I plan to speak with an advisor but based on this talk alone, my eye is on college A. I forgot to add college B which would had been 2 counties north but with this talk, Im taking college B off the tables and looking at College A and the AA. Again, will speak with advisor but im very likely gonna go with AA at CC than go to College A.

You should look up the four year college’s requirements for transfer students in your intended bachelor’s degree major. An associates degree may or may not fulfill them (some community colleges offer associates degree programs specifically to fulfill transfer requirements at specific four year colleges).

that would be the associate of arts. but it looks confusing tho. Some requirements are there some arent. Im going to speak with an advisor about this as I might also have some classes that can be subbed out with some I’ve already taken. I looked them up and an AA fulfills it but still…

My daughter said no to her honors college invite too. She was already double-degreeing and didn’t want to add the extra requirements. Some honors programs are great and add many benefits to the undergrad experience but at the end of the day I don’t think it tips the scales on a job application more than other factors like internship experience and GPA.

Sounds like you’ve jumped around quite a bit, major-wise. If CJ is your final decision, perhaps focusing less on your honors college prospects and more on which program will get you your bachelor’s degree in the shortest period of time and for the least amount of money.

College is hard and unfortunately not every professor is the best teacher. In the interest of reaching your goal of earning your degree and not becoming a career college student, I would urge you to consider not dropping anymore classes for these reasons. If a class is “hard”, try other avenues like study groups and office hours. Finding the perfect professor can also be a challenge. Sometimes you just need to put your head down and forge through.

OP: Maybe college is not the right path for you at this time. Have you considered working full-time for a year or two to better understand possible interests and career goals ?

i use rate my professor and make my moves accordingly from there.

unfortunately, my parents want me to do college and so far i already found my major. I intend to do a bachelor after AA than jump into law school. It has been also hard for me to get a job. applying to only get rejects.

If college wasnt the right path for me, I would had done an AS only and left it there so my parents would shut up.

Agree. I am still stuck on the “my parents wouldn’t let me go to that campus b/c it was too dangerous”. Will your parents still now have a vote in what you choose/where you go?

As an aside, my younger s also declined the honors college participation. He was double majoring, didn’t want the extra work and didn’t want the honors dorm. He wanted the “true freshman experience” in one of the other dorms. He sure got it! He also met his now wife there so I have no complaints!

I happened to go to such campus back in January to see what happens and they were a still no.

If your parents are supporting you then you need to live with their constraints. You are far from the only student with this issue.

Talk to your CC advisor, consider your options for majors, and line things up for the best possible major/outcome within your parents limits.

Your other option is working, saving, getting your own place, and becoming totally self-supporting. Then you can attend school part-time wherever you choose. But that does not sound like it is a consideration at this point.

Also agree that you should not worry about the honors college. Get your 4 year degree and move ahead.

Im not saying im against their constraints. If lets say I did not want college firm firm, I would had still done early admission as my HS was falling to pieces (broken restrooms or working restrooms but their were kids in their vaping and stuff, Additionally, special ed kids were frequently activating the fire alarms and their was a partial power outage at my school Feb 2022). That route, I would had been all set and done by Fall 2023.

Right now, Honours college is off the table along with College B that i forgot to mention when i first posted this. I should get the AA wrapped up by Spring/Summer 2027. I am permitted to go to 5 of the 7 active campuses.

If you want to go to law school, then criminal justice is not the right major.

CJ is excellent if you want to be a law enforcement officer, which is a solid career choice (good pay, portable, opportunities for advancement) and could even use your previoua technical skills. If that’s what interests you, then the AA is the right choice-checking you’re taking the right classes for the college you want to transfer to. In particular, look at their requirements in math&foreign language and make sure to take them at your CC (even if they’re not reuired for the AA), alongside all the major requirements.

If you want to go to Law School down the line, it means a major in Criminology or any Social Science/Humanities major where you must read A LOT and analyze a lot: English, Economics, History, Philosophy, Public policy.. or a major/minor combo from those or one as a major and a related minor.

You need to aim for straight As. For this, you need to attend Office Hours right from the first week- when you complete the reading you write down any questkon you have, anything you need more explanation about or that you found interesting and would like more info about. Then you bring those to office hours. It will make you known to your professor, help you by re explaining difficult points or digging into specifics. In addition, register with tutors ahead of time to push that paper from a B+ to an A-/A (that last step is the hardest). Join clubs and try to make a difference. Even if you don’t have work study, find a job.
Finally, if there are presentations, lectures, films, plays… on campus, GO.
Consider being a college student your full time job and spend 40H in campus.
All of this will help with grades and will build your resume, which in turn will help with the last Bachelor part of college.

Is there a reason why you’re using British spelling (are you/your parents from a commonwealth nation?)

This has been the best post I have read

I took AP Spanish Lan In HS Junior Year And Passed With A 4.

Sheeeesh. I didnt know that. I will then retain criminal Justice. I am considering adding a pinch of crime scene as electives over at College A.

This is excellent advice. I was looking into clubs and am considering joining. I have 3 options im looking at (Phi Theta Kappa, Supernatural related one, And An Environmental Sustainability Club). Supernatural Culture Is At The Bottom Of My List and PTK is on the top.

I am also gonna get a gym membership overthere too

Job is limited cause either reject or they go beyond the hours my parents allow me to work (this is at min. wage jobs, not at office related/hospital jobs where there time isnt an issue)

Not British. I have origins based out of Cuba/Chile. I like using British Spelling and have for the past 2 and a half years. Also, this is the first time I have ever been asked this. No Offence.

Anywho, Cant wait to make the last 8-10 Months the best at my CC!!!
