Sorry about the weird title, but it gets people to read these threads. so anyways, my tutor said that scoring only a 32 ACT (with a 29 in Math) after months of prep may suggest a mental disability especially with regards to processing information. Should I get tested?

I am not joking btw and most people at my school score 33+. The lowest score I know on either the SAT/ACT equivalent is a 1850 and that was an outlier. Most people I know have around a 2200 or a 33. That seems to be the average. eek :(

For how much I prepped, I definitely did not do very well. Someone told me that almost know one preps for the ACT at all and I know many people that have scored 33+ on their first try cold. I studied every day for 3 months but I could never finish the math section. That is why my tutor got worried.

Sure, you could go to the doctor and check your IQ distribution. And sure, if you find the right doctor, you’ll find one who will write up a little note allowing you to have extra time. Yes, people do this, and yes… some do score higher.

Then you’ll go into the real world, where colleges and jobs won’t give you extra time for whatever disability you choose to imagine yourself having.

Yes, I have ADD. Yes, I have a very distinctive IQ spread. Yes, I could’ve gotten extra time. I too, scored a 32 on my first ACT. I didn’t flail around moronically. I took the test a few more times without provisions. Life moves on.

Uh, you should get a new tutor >.>. Getting a 32 after preparation is by no means an indication of a mental disability. There are a lot more factors involved (e.g. mental status on the day of the test, over/underestimation of the test, sickness, etc.).

Most of the people I know at my school score above 2300+ and most of those who have taken the ACT score 34+ so I know what you mean. I scored in the 2100’s and a 32 on my ACT before I took the jump. I actually figured out that my methods of studying were not suited for the test. You might be studying the wrong way (or something else may be right). Just my two cents, though.

if that’s honestly how you perceive yourself, good luck in the real world aside from silly tests where application matters more than self assurance with a number…

sounds like a joke
if it’s true, then you should know that it is a good score.
maybe not good enough for a lock at HYPS etc., but definitely very good.
with a hook like important legacy, superstar athlete etc, it even gives you a real good shot at the top schools. Without that type of hook, even a 36 and 4.0 does not insure a spot. Just the way it is and always will be. Just chill. My opinion. Very good luck to you.

Seriously? You posted this for one of two reasons. You are stupid enough to think that the 99th percentile is bad, or you wanted a pat on the back for your high standards.

If the later, than congrats on being super smart.

He isn’t a ■■■■■ you guys, just naive. I am sorry that some idiotic tutor told you that, but know that he is completely wrong. COMPLETELY. You should be proud of that score, seeing that it is AT LEAST adequate for every school, and near the top for all schools outside the top 15 or so. Be happy and don’t let that guy put you down. Best of luck.

“Someone told me that almost know one preps for the ACT at all and I know many people that have scored 33+ on their first try cold.”

Well based off that sentence I’m surprised that you scored a 32 (just teasing), but honestly don’t be dumb, you got a 32 and did better than 99% of the nation. Sure, if your comparing yourself to the overachieving group of kids that roam the CC forums you were around average… be sure to tell your tutor that he/she is nearly as dumb as this thread

Depends, I scored a 35, but kids at my school still think I’m stupid for some reason… ??
I’m pretty goofy…
A 32 is an extremely good score, you should be proud. Now what you can do is continue to practice under time constraints and if that is just not for you, then move on to the SAT where time is hardly the problem.
I would say you are stupid in asking this question. You are offending people who are ecstatic to get a 30 on the test.

No, you should by no means be worried. I got a private tutor and have an extremely high GPA. All of the people in my classes scored better than me, even people with very low GPA’s and even people who are somewhat failing. Some people cannot test as well as others.

Just to support what charactercounts4 said above, a friend of mine had a 2.6 GPA in high school, but he go a 2240 on his SAT (equivalent to a 34), I have a 3.84 and was pretty excited about my 31 (equivalent to a 2070)
