I’m not judging in the least, but I’m curious. Do you actually seek out what college x person/leader/whatever went to, or is it just in passing you hear Y is a graduate of Z so I should make an effort to shop there?

^romanni…the later for sure. Just in passing…

And mom22039… I said it was a quirk. Your entry wasn’t cleaver, sarcastic or anything. Yawn.

It’s just that your examples weren’t very explicit. If I said I make it a point to watch Diane Sawyer on ABC because she went to my D’s school, then we could all say “ah, I get what you mean” (and then debate whether that was stupid or not, LOL). You just gave very obscure examples. What college has a “connection” with CBS - a gazillion dollar corporation with a gazillion employees? Are you talking about someone at the top (beats me who the CEO is), are you talking about a news anchor, what are you talking about?

I use Crest because of the affiliation with Indiana University, so I understand. I used to watch Jane Pauley for the same reason.
If I needed a lawyer I would probably seek one that attended DS college as an undergrad as well. I am impressed with the calibar of student that they send to law school and impressed with the critical thinking skills that the school emphasizes.
Now as for hardware stores, etc, I pick that based on the NASCAR drivers that I support. :)

“And mom22039… I said it was a quirk. Your entry wasn’t cleaver, sarcastic or anything. Yawn.”

??That also is a confusing comment to what mom22039 said, who was agreeing with you.

I don’t shop based upon where me or my kids went to college, but when I see interesting people that I know attended, I get a burst of pride and have to point it out to my family. Like Zachary Quinto (Spock) when I watch Star Trek, and Cote de Pablo (Ziva David) when I watch NCIS. I might consider buying products that someone interesting from my kids alma mater were selling if I liked and respected the people a lot.

I just tell my kids to ask themselves, “Who’s driving the Mercedes?” Ie, turn off the lights, don’t believe all ads- and why put more money in the pocket of some CEO (enhance his lifestyle) just because he’s affiliated with your school-- unless you have some good reason? To each his own. I wish you’d used a smaller example, like supporting some small starting venture cuz he or she went to your school. Or some artist or community project.

Gee Morris I thought I was supporting what you had to say.

For those who want to know all references are to Bucknell. Back in the 70s a senior CBS exec brought a month of events to Bucknell. These days alumnus Les Moonves runs a division of CBS. Ken Langone was one of the founders of Home Depot. He is also a major benefactor of the NYU Langone Medical Center. The author Phillip Roth also spent time at Bucknell…

So, if you are a Bucknell parent or alumnus these are mentioned in alumni magazine and other publications. It’s part of the Bucknell experience or knowledge base that one develops.

Your comment definitely read supportively, Mom22039. I’m going to guess Morris just scrolled up quickly and addressed the wrong poster in her reply. I’ve probably done that before. :)

Ok, that makes it clearer. It was just pretty darn obscure to say “I support CBS and Home Depot and Philip Roth.” Who would have known the common thread?

What an odd threat- it has it all…and not in a good way.

Sheesh folks. Yeah, I was confused too. But there’s nothing offensive or disturbing about the thread. If it doesn’t work for you, just move on. There’s been a bit of piling on here.

I use Colgate toothpaste and eat Rice.

I am not really aware of where anybody went to college, but I suppose when I am shopping for doctors I like to see my alma mater. If all else is equal, I would probably pick the one that went to Umich. But that has more to do with it being one of the most reputable universities in the state and country, and less to do with the fact that I went there… I probably would have picked my doctors the same way before I attended.

It is always nice to encounter a fellow alum.

I guess I should read that college newsletter they send all the time. I didn’t even recognize references to my youngest sons school. My husband can feel even better about frequenting Home Depot…as long as he’s fixing up the house!

I am in fog. So, I might be poking into the sky here.
" guess I figure that if my, or my kids, alma maters become more wealthy, prestigious,or well known, that will benefit them, ie school reputation goes up, so does their degree. I also figure, if the above, there will be more donations, to the benefit of future potential scholarship students. "
- This sentence in particular has no meanning to me. Specifically, for everybody in our family, alma mater’s prestige (none were prestigious) was completely irrelevant. We all ended up where we wanted to be as a result of having degrees. Can you, please, elaborate what this actually means: “school reputation goes up, so does their degree” ?
What it actually means that the reputation of the degree goes up? How is it beneficial for the future of the graduate?

Yes, my antibiotic of choice is Streptomycin, I use Smart Balance instead of butter, and my favorite type of energy is electric. :-/

Well, I ran into a situation where my H and I were in a legal matter and the opposing counsel happened to have gone to our shared alma mater and indeed was in the same class as my H (though didn’t know one another). I didn’t feel any loyalty at that moment; he was still an adversary in this matter :-)

I understood you morris.

I kind of do this too. Same thing with my high school alma mater.

Miami-
I guess I must be in a fog too. I cannot understand a word of your post. What are you trying to say?

Too bad there are not post numbers! I agree…dumbest thread…ever. I don’t get the point.
