I sometimes shop based on where I, or my kids, went to college.

Good thing CC is anonymous because I am going to admit a really silly behavior. I make decisions, when there is information to do so, based on my own alma mater or my kids. So I watch CBS in the morning rather than ABC, etc. ( And it is also mostly news and not as much fluff, but that is another discussion.). I shop at Home Depot rather than Lowes. And the decision list goes on. Eat Ben & Jerry’s over other ice creams, etc. ( And especially hope Phillip Roth wins the Nobel Prize in Literature.)

I guess I figure that if my, or my kids, alma maters become more wealthy, prestigious,or well known, that will benefit them, ie school reputation goes up, so does their degree. I also figure, if the above, there will be more donations, to the benefit of future potential scholarship students.

Unilever bought Ben& Jerrys. I dont really understand the connotations.
I think we all have silly superstitions, mine come out more when I am stressed, ive noticed, ( although I havent noticed them lately)
But, you might want to think about if you are going out of your way to patronize one over the other.
Is it costing you money or time?

I don’t understand what you mean. You watch CBS because …? (Is there a news anchor affiliated with your kids’ school?) Was Home Depot founded by an alum of your kid’s school?

There’s a very prominent news anchor who went to my D’s school. I don’t watch her any more or less than I ever did, but I do always think of the connection when I see her on screen.

As for my S’s school, there are so many performing arts grads in TV shows and movies who went there that I don’t need to make a special effort to watch them - they’re all over!

I also dont understand what you mean. Some/most/all of these businesses are publicly-held. Unless your univs own these businesses or have a substantial interest, I dont see how it enriches your univs.

I buy lots of Gatorade! Then again, the wife does most of the shopping and she keeps getting the cheaper Powerade…her and I need to have the “talk”. :P

So you’re enriching Quaker / PepsiCo … not seeing the point here.

This one is lost on me.

Me too…

Im glad Gatorade took the flame retardant out of their formula, although it was only after that young woman made a petition. But it is still full of nasty stuff.
Why pay for water?
I use Nuun tablets, or emergen-c.
We dont actively select products that have a connection with the kids schools, however I do admit that since we have used Apple computers exclusively since the llsi, Reed felt very homey with all the Macs on campus.

Emergen-C is equally full of “nasty stuff,” emeraldkity. They just got you because you heard the “C” part, thought of Vitamin C, and thought, “well, that must be nice and warm and fuzzy and natural, because it’s not like vitamin C is a chemical.” (Though of course it is.) But I digress.

Bish whet?

Not following. ??? :-S

Niquill- thank you. That really helped clear it all up.

Can you like not?

I hope you used that in your admission essays!

dumbestthreadever

Such catty. Much wow. (Meme reference… moving along)

I don’t understand this either. I don’t think the average person can even name someone on CBS or whatever let alone associate them with a school. Meh. We all have our quirks

I know it is a quirk. I stated as such. :)

So what I meant was, if given options, I will select one if it has some affiliation with my or one of my kids alma maters. This means the alum is the founder or CEO, etc.

I do not think my choice will directly benefit the school or my kid. I guess it is just a way to narrow down a choice.

As I originally stated, I know it seems silly. But if it really isn’t much different than rooting for a sports team. When my alma mater makes the basketball playoffs, I root for them. When an alum runs a company, I try to support by choosing it rather than the competition.

So I guess no one else has this “quirk.” Just curious. That’s why I started the thread.

I don’t pay the least attention to that. I’m more concerned with “made in China”.

I completely get it and can identify the school. I remember a great lecture series due to a connection to CBS, a trustee who founded Home Depot, and Philip Roth attended but didn’t graduate right? During my time there we had a connection to Tiffany’s…
