I’m an international student from Vietnam, and I was deferred too. WashU is definitely my dream school. This morning after seeing the decision, I sat still and stared at the screen not doing anything for like 30 minutes. But thanks a lot, ollump for such an encouraging post, and I’m also glad to see this thread because it makes me feel better and hopefully will be a continuous support for us till the end of this application cycle. I’m on my way to figure out what to do in the next few weeks to get an acceptance letter from WashU in April. And I very much hope that the “2/3 those deferred finally got accepted RD last year” thing is true.

Anyone knows when they released RD results in previous years?

And congrats ED applicants who got accepted! I truly hope I’ll be able to see you at WashU next fall.

ATTENTION ALL THOSE DEFERRED: I just found last year’s CC thread where the discussion about how many deferred were eventually admitted to check exactly what was claimed by “newhere”. Here is what was actually said:

Quote from “newhere” on 12/14/07 : “around 2/3 of the ED applicants are accepted to the school, including those deferred, the rest is automatically rejected in the second round (RD) Very few are rejected from the beginning (MIT does the same, most EA are referred).”

CLARIFICATION: 2/3 of ED applicants (NOT 2/3 of those deferred). Still, that’s a pretty good percentage and reason to have hope that the game is not over yet. Good luck everyone. What you do in the next few months CAN possibly make a difference! By the way, RD decisions came out online March 14 last year.

Again, keep in mind that this is just one person’s claim and we don’t know this person’s background or level of authority. Wash U doesn’t publish any statistics of this nature so that we can verify any of this.

Based on my information concerning WashU admission, combined with other previous not accurate claims by newhere - I would discount the 2/3 claim. While the ED admit percent is higher than the RD admit percent (@17-18%), it is not that much higher. Given the fact that most ED applicants tend to have strong stats, I think that many deferals have a very good shot in RD.
