So I applied to Washington University in St. Louis ED and UMich EA and was accepted to both. Obviously my ED contract is binding, but I now feel like I only applied ED to WashU because I got a great first impression of the school, and I’m starting to think that I would be happier at UMich. I did the MMSS program and loved it, so I already know that it’s a good fit for me.

My question is–will having been accepted and then declining Michigan’s offer of admission hurt my chances of being accepted as a transfer?

Obviously I could still love WashU, but this question is just a “what if?” kind of thing.

Additional Info: one of my LORs was from a Michigan professor from my MMSS course it was the most amazing rec i’ve ever read

Rejecting Michigan’s offer will not hurt you in the future. As a transfer, a new admissions personnel will be seeing your application and assessing your credentials.

If you are already planning to transfer to U-M and have no desire to attend WashU, I would consider looking into if there is any way to break the ED contract. One would think that WashU would not want a student who already wants to leave. I know they are contingent on financial aid but I don’t know much about ED.

^please don’t do this. ED is a binding contract. If you renege on the contract (other than for financial purposes) Wash U might contact other schools to black list you.

“Colleges say that they do not want a student - even an Early Decision applicant - who does not want to come, so a call to the admissions office may be sufficient to be released. Be warned, though, that such a move risks losing every other college acceptance as well. Early Decision information is shared among many schools, and it’s a rare college that wants a student so untrustworthy he will renege on a binding agreement. Your child may be better off attending his Early Decision college and transferring later.”

I would give washington u a shot you never know you might love it if not you can always transfer is there something in particular you do not like ik the school has a great rep for academics
