I think I'm the only one who thinks AP English is the hardest

I’m a junior and it’s a lot harder than my other 2 AP classes- US History and Calc.

Well with writing I’m OK with. But the reading comprehension/analysis… my gawd I’m terrible at. I cannot dig deep into books at all. Everybody would say intelligent crap when analyzing a passage or something, and I would give extremely basic on-the-surface answers. It doesn’t help that she calls on me all the time.

In The Great Gatsby, I wrote a little essay saying that Gatsby never truly loved Daisy but just loved her cause by marrying her, he would solidify his status with the upper-class. I’m just facepalming hard at myself.

The way I see it, I don’t see reading comprehension as a skill you can truly improve on. I can’t just tell myself to dig deeper man. ****.

/rant

I’m in Lang and AP Bio, and I definitely have to agree that Lang is harder. Bio is a lot of work, but its not difficult like AP English is.

All skills can be improved. Just because you aren’t good at the comprehension part now doesn’t mean that you’re consigned to surface-skimming for the rest of your days. There are plenty of courses, tutoring things, online resources, etc. to help you get better. Also, I facepalm you as well for your Gatsby essay. However. Learn from your mistakes and talk to your teacher about this whole thing.

If you just wanted to rant and I’m intruding with my reality  feel free to ignore me.

I feel like English, compared to all other subjects, is difficult to be good at. When it comes to science, math, and even history, all you have to do is learn the material.

English, however, is all about analysis of reading passages and the like. It’s a much harder skill to physically sit down and practice, let alone study for. So, I completely agree with you, OP.

Yes it definitely is one of the hardest, especially my teacher. Ap Lang is a bit hard, and she grades pretty harsh

I have AP English Lit, it’s not hard it’s just a lot of work. It really depends on how well you do in the subject on a normal basis. You just have to find a different way to look at everything other than the teachers way.

AP English Lit is way easier than my AP Government/Politics class in my opinion.

I mean - I disagree personally, but I’m an English fiend. I love it and AP English is by far my favorite class. However, I wouldn’t say it is easy. Rhetorical analysis and synthesis doesn’t come naturally to someone nor is it an easy concept to grasp for everyone. Some people get numbers. Others get rhetoric. As simple as that.

I know a girl in my AP English class who just beasts every day in AP Calculus BC, but she’s really struggling with her English essays. It depends on the person.

I thought I was going to /hate/ AP Lit because I /hate/ having to analyze books, but it’s not bad.

Is the problem that the “messages” completely fly over your head? Or do you just disagree with them or don’t agree that they actually are messages? If the latter, it should be easy to BS the crap out of essays. I don’t believe a WORD of what I write and actually make it sound extremely corny on purpose but my teacher loves it.

AP Lit was definitely the hardest AP exam I’ve taken so far. The class itself isn’t bad - it’s mainly the volume of work which is difficult. The exam, though, is another story. You’ve really got to prep well for the essays if you want to be sure to ace them (especially the open essay), and the time limit on the multiple choice section can be pretty brutal.

That said, everyone does so bad on the exam so the curve is incredibly generous. I took it sophomore year and missed at least 10 multiple choice questions and completely bombed one of the essays, yet I still got a 5. So don’t worry too much; study hard and you’ll be just fine. If you’re having trouble with analysis, I’d really recommend this book. It’s really, really great for help with analyzing prose and poetry. It’s super in-depth, but really entertaining and easy to read.
