I took CC classes in high school and didn’t get a 4.0. Do I still have a chance?

Hello.

I’m currently a high school senior who’s been homeschooled since my sophomore year. I’ve taken CC classes on and off my high school years. They’re mostly communication classes, not really academic ones, and I’ve gotten Bs in some of them and one C.

Here are my grades:
Fall 2012 (Sophomore)
COM Argumentation and Debate — B

Spring 2014 (Junior)
Intro to Public Speaking — B
General Psychology — B
Intro to Communication — A

Summer 2014
Critical Thinking and Logic – A
Intro to Philosophy — A

Fall 2014 (Projected Grades: A-B)
Ethics
American Pol Institution
Intro to International Rel

Grade as of Summer 2014: 3.26
Total units by Fall 2014: 31

Extracurriculars: I’m currently a senator in the community college I’m attending, and I serve in two committees (Accreditation and Academic Affairs).

Am I doomed?! I plan on taking at least 18 units this spring semester (not as a concurrent student since I turned 18 a few months ago) so I can raise my GPA faster.

Will UCs see this as a weakness? I want to attend Haas. ;___;

Well, obviously you aren’t meant to be an actor. :))

Seriously, though. 3.26 is low for Haas. The UC will like that you chose an alternative path, so that will help a lot. You are not doomed at all. Just not sure about Haas. Consider as you continue your journey at CCC, that maybe you do something that stands out: start a non-profit, or do something that super elevates you. That can open lots of doors.

Daughter 2 wanted to take a CCC class (she’s a junior in hs) and I dissuaded her for the very reason you noted: you started a little too soon and those grades are there to haunt you. However, this is all redeemable. Congrats on your fast progress! There are positives in your case that outweigh the negatives, not least of which are initiative and gumption.

Haha! If I valued my grades at that point in time, I would have gotten As in all of them. Well, I probably would have gotten a B in acting…I think.

Yes, I’m aware that it’s quite low, but I’m planning on attending CC for a year or two to raise my GPA to at least 3.7 and to fulfill the General Requirements. If I get my grade up to 3.7, will that be sufficient? I have this fear that if I don’t get a 4.0, UCs will reject me.

I’ll try to come up with something that will set me apart. evillaughter

Thank you so much for your response! The plan in my head is starting to materialize now! <3

@schoolrumble First off, get that 4.0 out of your head. There are ppl up here getting into UCLA and even UCB with 3.4s, depending on major. Yeah, I was surprised at first too. And Haas supposedly is not that gung-ho on 4.0s (or so they say). Maybe 3.99 :-j

Berkeley is the most holistic, they want to see a person engaging with things around them. And this includes Haas. If you could get to 3.7 you could have a shot. Have you checked the Haas web page? Memorize those four defining principles and start thinking how you can apply some of them to yourself. I would venture to say if you clearly show excellence in one of those principles, with business-related ECs, as @luckie1367 noted, you can be competitive.
