I took the SAT once without studying, without using any strategies, without anything just to see how I would do and to get familiar with the test- a pure dry run and my composite was a 1550.

CR: 540
W: 540
Math: 470
Essay: 6
Multiple Choice: 58

How well did I do considering this was basically just my raw knowledge (and this was RIGHT after finals last year, so I was obviously fried and overwhelmed)? Any advice to improve? My target score is above 1800.

Well, you did just about average, I think. There are a lot of threads on here about SAT prep - start reading.

It’s all about your goals - which schools you are aiming for, what scholarships, etc.

I took the SAT once and didn’t like it, so I took the ACT and scored higher. I suggest that you try to do the same, see if ACT works better with the way you think (nearly all colleges will accept either without bias).

For me, practice tests were my best friend. I would take them (timed) and then check my answers and see what I did wrong. Rinse and repeat.
