Hi! So I'm looking into getting into some of the higher class academies in the USA. And I'm not really happy with my ssat per se. I got a 93rd percentile (98 math, 92 synonyms/analogies, 78 reading), and I'm in the 6th grade as well. I know I'll keep on retaking it until I can get over a 95th percentile. But I was just wondering if I did okay for my first ever testing. Also my gpa's trash, I had all A's through the first trimester. But got three A- in the second. (PE, History, and French), although I was sick for the entirety of a history project, and my teacher gave me a 0. Before I could convince her to change it, the trimester was over, causing me to go from a 95 to a 92. Do you think I could get accepted to higher class academies?
An A- is definitely not “trash.” A 93rd percentile is already very good. What do you mean by “higher class academies?” We can’t properly chance you because only giving your stats is not enough.
Deerfield, Exeter, Groton, Choate. I don’t really feel qualified though, as everyone around me, is either just as smart as me or smarter. Sorry if I offended you with the A- thing, it’s just that there are kids around me with A’s in everything.
My extracurriculars are
5 years Choir,
4 years playing Trombone,
7 years Piano,
2 years in our school’s math club,
3 years in my school’s bands combined,
and I do Wushu martial arts.
I’m still going to retake the ssat in April, as I feel I could do a lot better. I still think I did ok for my first ever time though.
I apologize in advance for being harsh to a 6th grader, but based just on the limited info provided, I’d say no. Not without an attitude adjustment. Calling your GPA “trash” is just disingenuous. The plan of “retaking it until I can get over a 95th percentile” is folly; AO’s will view you as too one-dimensional.
Also, I go to a school, in a pretty small city/town, do you know if this would affect my chances?
It won’t.
The AOs won’t care what place you are from. And you are only in 6th grade. You have pleeeenty of time to improve your application (and attitude). For ECs, they are good, but I think you should also explore some other areas such as sports or community service…
Methinks this belongs in the circular file forum called “Chances” with a new title, “Do You Think I Have a Snowball’s Chance with these Terrible Scores?”
Yep, I’m sorry I think my original post came off rude and might discredit my abilities. I shouldn’t have used that wording.
You are aware that the schools you are planning on applying to start at 9th grade right?
I just think 6th grade might be a bit too early to start thinking about this
Enjoy your childhood!!
Are you considering junior boarding schools? They generally offer 7th, 8th, and 9th grades.
I need to ask, how did you manage to get less than 100% in PE?
We have pop quizzes and tests.
It probably is to be honest:3 But once I start obsessing something I can’t stop.
Does Wushu not count as a sport? Btw I just want to say sorry for my pessimistic attitude towards my grades.
It’s quite easy. I’ve always said that I find it ridiculous that PE is graded on anything but a P/F scale.
Assuming you took the middle level SSAT, your scores are irrelevant for at least 3 of the 4 schools you listed, as they require the upper level SSAT (or ISEE). And your scores are irrelevant to all 4 if you’re planning to apply for 9th grade.
@YoungThriver I got an A- in PE :((
Anyway I agree with all the previous posters. In no world is all As with a few A-s terrible.
The difference between a 93rd SSAT and a 95th SSAT is immeasurable.
