I totally failed the SSAT..I feel so dumb!

All through school(well since 3rd grade) I’ve only gotten 2 B+, and all A’s. I’m embarrassed to share but I’m sure someone else somewhere may have bombed the test as well.

My horrible scores are:

Verbal- 590… 12%
Quantitative - 730 …75%
Reading- 595… 14%

Overall- 29% So I guess I can’t read or comprehend:( I can take a flex test tomorrow but i think I will go ahead and submit these scores since not a lot of time left. I’m not applying to highly competitive schools but I surely didn’t expect scores this low. I’ll be taking the ISEE soon for another school, hope I do better.

It is one test, it is NOT your whole application, nor does it have to define who you are as a potential student to schools. Schools are going to look at it, then investigate with your grades and teacher recommendations. This is exactly why they ask for them. Also, this is why you write essays etc.

I guess it really depends on the schools you are applying to, that will determine how much your scores really matter. However, I would definitely spend some time making sure the rest of my application was great, if I were you.

To be honest, I think that the SSAT does not give a clear picture of the applicant at all, especially the verbal section of the test is pure memorization of definition of words you have never seen, To explain why I believe this, my first SSAT verbal was 60ish percentile, and my second test was over 90, with only 1 month in between. Your grades seem to be excellent by the way. Perhaps you spent all that time drawing or playing sports or doing what you do best, instead of studying for the SSAT, so don’t fret your SSAT score too much. Good luck with your application process!

Don’t stress! Obviously the scores aren’t ideal or what you wanted but school look at the whole picture. Some kids (including myself) are just really bad at test taking. What schools are you applying to?

Hey 99er here. Dont stress it man. I was relaxed and got 99 but I am still nervous for the outcome.

So, everyone here understands that the kid who posted the above comment is being boastful and insensitive.

Ugh.

I’m sorry you had a bad day and/or bad test. (Regardless, your math score is solid.) Don’t let it define you. You know you’re not “dumb” because you’ve had a consistent, strong academic record. Consider this an excellent opportunity to gain insight about your future college testing plan.

Now, what can you do in the next month? There’s the ISEE and you can certainly take the February SSAT. If the results are better, there’s no reason not to submit them to the folks you interviewed with. You don’t have to submit until after you’ve seen your scores. Good luck and hang in there.

In case you don’t know, most schools including boarding schools usually accept either SSAT or ISEE, so if you do better in one than the other you know what to do …

Hi. Don’t feel dumb and get down on yourself. My son is a very intelligent 8th grader who does well in school , and his SSAT scores were not very good. And by not very good, I do not mean he got an 88 quantitative when he had hoped for a 98. One of his scores was very good, one mediocre, and one very poor – even after a lot of practice and tutoring and taking the test 3 times, including last spring. He does fine in the subject in school and we are comfortable that he can function at grade level. He’s not great at taking standardized tests (they don’t do them at his independent school). In taking the test 3 times, his scores were all over the place, though ultimately improved in the aggregate. It seems to me that the verbal and reading are areas where you can improve quite a bit by practice, and I think that the SSATs do really require a lot of practice. I’ve also heard that in past years, kids from our very small school with abysmal SSAT scores have gotten into very good schools – it’s by no means the only measure. This is our first time through this process, so I am no expert, but I hope that you don’t get discouraged by the results of one test on one day. Hang in there!
