Reccomendations and Essays:
Teacher: Pimped OUT.
Counselor: Awesome.
Essays: Working through them, aiming HIGH! Any ideas for what to write about?

So what do you guys think? I know the test scores are low, I’m taking Math IIC and the ACT in October and rushing the scores in. Thanks for the feedback in advance!! =-D

You can’t handle the truth! Sorry, had to say it.

I’m not going to comment on your chances because, frankly, its impossible to predict what a school as selective as Stanford is going to do.

Haha its all good I set you up for it. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate the honesty. Maybe I posted because everyone was doing it and it was sort of a comfort thing haha. But i figure it cant hurt and any feedback can only be positive. What do you others think?

Ah, wildcat beat us all to it!

Your stats are on the low side for Stanford application. The SAT IIs are pretty good. I might recommend you retake the SAT I instead of the ACT because the fact that you’ve already taken it once should help you get a better score and they prefer the SAT to the ACT so I’m not sure how much a good ACT score would help. Also, does your GPA count in freshmen grades? Because Stanford doesn’t.

The ECs and awards are great. Probably. It’s hard to tell with the list how involved you were in each activity. For example, did you attend philosophy club just once or did you disprove Occam’s Razor? You really need to focus on just the biggest ones because with such a long list it might seem you just showed up for a meeting or two all over the place. In your essays you will need to explain how the clubs interconnect and support your passion for… scientific debates, logic, _______? You need something to tie the ECs together so you have a nice, easy-to-digest whole. It’s good to have lots of interests, but you want the adcom to understand your interests and you have 10-15 minutes to do it.

Final verdict: If you can explain your ECs in your essays, then you have a good chance.

Stanford would rather have you focused and committed to a few EC’s than to list a whole essay of EC’s where you might not have much involvement in them. Give specifics to what u obtained from each EC and describe them in your essays. Take this advice from an Indian brotha…

Thanks alot for all the information. Yeah all the clubs I listed I devote at least an hour or two to every week, so Its not like I’m club hopping after school haha. In which of the essays do you think I should explain my clubs in? In a shorter one or a longer essay?

Short Essays (you must write on all three topics; each is about one-third page in length)

* Of all the activities, interests and experiences listed on the previous page, which is the most meaningful to you, and why?

 • Sharing intellectual interests is an important aspect of university life. Describe an idea or experience that you find intellectually exciting, and explain why.
 • Write a note to your future roommate relating a personal experience that reveals something about you.

Long Essay (choose only one topic; this should be no more than one page)

* “A picture is worth a thousand words” as the adage goes. Include a photograph or picture that represents something important to you, and explain its significance.

 • As you reflect on your life thus far, what has someone said, written or expressed in some fashion that is especially meaningful to you? Why?

And secondly, you recommended me to take the SAT. Do you think it would be better to take the SAT I and not send in Math IIC and take the ACT also, or take Math IIC and the ACT. Because I want to apply SCEA and November scores do not meet the deadline.

Thanks for your thoughts, you’ve been really helpful.

You’re right, I had forgotten that November scores wouldn’t arrive soon enough. Well, you should probably take Math IIC then since a good score on that will make up for your SAT I Math score and they did specifically recommend taking Math IIC. A good score on the ACT would help, but I’m not really sure how much.

Are those the 2006 ap questions? They’re the same as last year’s questions. In the first short essay you should explain your biggest activity (probably the science stuff). The ap doesn’t give much room for explaining clubs and awards so you’ll have to fit those in the essays. The longer essay shouldn’t be a list of things you’ve done, but nice little examples that show your intellectual enthusiasm are a good thing. And I’d say you could just use the “note to roommate” essay to just show a bit of personality, like a sense of humor or curiosity or diligence, because it’s a bit boring to just read solely about clubs and awards.

And if you don’t think that you explained what you were involved in well enough in the essays don’t hesitate to put a little info in the additional comments. The adcom might not know what the Grumman Research High School Involvement Program (HIP) is and a sentence or two explaining the program and your involvement would be useful.

Good luck.

12% or so, just like everyone else…

Thank you very much Zeller for all your help. I’ll be sure to do that when I write my essays. Now I need to actually start writing them, haha this is going to be interesting… :-)
