I want to become a Lobbyist (Government Affairs). What should I do?

Hey all,

I have a bunch of great government relations and grassroot lobbying internships under my belt. I graduate in May 2011. What should I do to become a lobbyist? What path should I take? Any further education you think I need? Certifications? Law School even?

All help is appreciated! Thanks!

If you think I need more info about me in this post, I'll put it in.

Go to law school.

Yeah, if you want to do that sort of work, go to law school. Most lobbyists are attorneys or former politicians.

It's all about getting access.

It depends on what you want to lobby for and to. You can lobby for a certain industry, in which case you will want to work in the corresponding department or agency at whatever level of government you wish to work lobby in.

You can also lobby for a lobbying firm, in which case you will want to be in a position to know the legislators and their chiefs of staff (and advisors, etc.)

So: What exactly are you looking to do?
