That would be architecture. Depending on what school you go to, you will probably have to learn all branches of architecture in order to get your degree, but after that you will probably be able to land a job in commercial architecture.

RISD and Virginia Tech are really good for architecture, in case you were wondering.

If you want to DESIGN buildings – large, medium, or small size – then you need to be an architect.

If you want to actually BUILD buildings, then you have a lot more options, depending upon how willing you are to get your hands dirty. Contractors, who are the ones actually on the site making it happen, can come from a variety of backgrounds including architecture, engineering, and/or business; they can also work their way up the ranks, starting as an apprentice or laborer.

As others have said, it depends on what aspect of the field you’re interested in. Architecture would allow you to design the look of the building as well as the space inside. Civil engineering would allow you to design the physical structure that the architect envisions. Majoring in either of these fields will give you the option of working for a contractor, who actually makes the designs a reality.

EDIT: I forgot about the construction management major, which is offered in some places. It more or less combines some engineering with some business and is lighter on the math than engineering. You won’t be doing any designing though.

Regardless of what the size of the structure you wish to build, you need an architect to design it, an engineer to calculate the wind forces and to determine whether or not the structure actually can be built and a middle man like a Construction manager that ensures that the architects are talking and communicating the right problems and fixes with the engineers and coordinates all the efforts of the subcontractors and organizes the schedules and deadlines…

If you wish to design any building, big or small, architecture is definitely the way to go.

IIT is very well known for tall buildings. The Council for Tall buildings and Urban Habitat is also located there. Check out their architecture program - specifically Professor Antony Wood.
