I’m an art history major and a film studies minor. I feel like I should double minor but I don’t know what would be a wise choice for my second minor. I just want it to be as easy as possible for me to get an art history related job. I don’t want to minor in education. What else would be a good fit?

Edit: Before anyone comments, my goal is to get my PHD in art history.

How would philosophy help me? I think it’d be a waste of money and this is coming from someone who reads Sartre in her spare time. I need something that I think will actually make me stand out.
I don’t think my school offers critical theory.

Maybe because it would make you think and have to articulate and write. Which seem to me to be good things to develop if you are going to eventually have to write a thesis for a PHD. Because art and philosophy often overlap and you may need to reference “ideas” when you are talking about art.

If your goal is a decent job then getting internships, being a stand up person and forging good relationships with your professors, mentors and supervisors will take you further than any 2nd minor.

I just had a friend who lost a very nice position as a curator at a very small museum. It She landed on her feet in an artsy job (art magazine). What saved her? She had some technical skills (web design, web publishing) that she had developed out of interest on the side working as part of a very small organization (had to do a bit of everything). She was also a very good writer…both skills made her an attractive candidate and distinguished her from the many art-experienced applicants. A minor that improves writing skills is a great idea.

I don’t like to push technical minor/major if you have zero interest, but look around at what your school offers. If you have some core requirements that force you into areas outside of art and film, perhaps you can build a second minor out of these courses. Take advantage of things that are interesting and may, perhaps, give you that little edge and make you stand out from all the other art history majors. You will also be more attractive to a PhD program you have multiple interests and skills that you can bring to the program.

I haven’t been on this account in years but I just wanted to give the update that I ended up getting invited to an honors program which counted as its own minor; Honors in the Humanities. I’m also two classes away from a philosophy minor but it’s not worth staying an extra semester.

Looking back at the advice, I think the best post dealt with technical skills, such as web development. Being able to use Photoshop, code, etc is highly desired in my field right now at entry-level. I suggest others to follow that advice or at least learn technical skills in their spare time.
