I want to email teachers

So yeah as the title says, I want to email teachers especially department heads like music director, coaches etc. but like what am I supposed to be saying? Has anyone sent in any emails before? I feel like having a connection will be good but im not too sure… thanks!

I would suggest doing this ONLY if you have a specific question that ONLY this person can answer.

Emailing just to make a connection…I’m not sure is a good idea.

Don’t do this if you do not have a specific question which can only be answered by that professor.

This is the sort of advice well-meaning but clueless people give, based on the idea that networking is a good way to get a job and get ahead.

But individual teachers at a prep school (or college) have next to no say in admissions. I know kids of teachers who didn’t even get into the school their parents teach at. If anything, it could backfire… a teacher isn’t going to bother emailing the admissions committee saying “this kid sounds smart!” But they might email saying “This kid won’t stop emailing me and is really annoying.”

As others say, if you have a specific question that only that teacher can answer, and which would effect your decision to attend the school, it may be worth it to email the teacher after acceptances have gone out.

But if you’re just emailing teachers to “network” or to get on their radar or because you think it will look good for admissions… it won’t. It will just waste your time and theirs.

Agree with the others, it doesn’t make sense to contact teachers or coaches – it won’t help unless you could be a recruited athlete or musician.

Don’t. Just don’t. With the exception of a recruited athlete and the school has a specific contact form for this purpose.

Your point of contact at the boarding school is admissions. Ask questions of them. If they deign that it would be worthwhile to put you in touch with someone else, they will facilitate the introduction.

You, as the applicant, need to be respectful of peoples’ function and their time. You fail when you’re asking questions just to ask questions. At a boarding school, it is rare that an individual is “just a” coach, music director, etc. They also teach full time and may have other responsibilities like dorm parent. And the ones whose “only” job is a coach are generally not full-time employees. They don’t have time to deal with cold calls from prospective students

Agree with others. Teacher af private school here and the only influence we have is evaluations after a visit. Unless you have a specific question, it will do nothing or serve to annoy people. And really any question should go through admissions to the specific teacher.

Well I wouldn’t email them out of the blue, I would only email them if your interviewer or someone in the admissions team recommends you to or tells you to.

Also are you applying this year?
